I know it's because she want's me to have something nice, but I can't justify spending that much money for a bit more shine on the same thing I can get for half the price.
Do your research mate. It's how I bought my latest set of wheels. Wasn't overly serious about buying untill I saw a low km near new one drop 8k in price. It was only 12 months old with 1 service under it's belt. Virtually brand new.
Im looking at another car tomorrow. Basically the same specs, but a couple of years older. Low kms, and half the price.

Dont need the flashy car. Just something comfortable and practical. Plus after reading up on the Outlander, it looks good but the performance and ride comfort is terrible.

If you look at near new then you should confirm if you get the balance of the new car warranty, some manufacturers are offering up to 7 year warranties now, so a 3 year old car might have 2-4 years left on the warranty. Kia and Holden offer some of the best warranties around, I'd be looking at one of their yards for a traded in vehicle 2-3 years old.

Warranty is transferable on all cars.
Missus got an ASX that was 11 months old and got the remainding 4 year warranty with it.

You don’t get capped price servicing though.
But mitsi dealer has done it at 5% more for her.

I pop into the little one at the Brickworks occasionally, they've been asking for people to fill out a survey about their customer service skills, obviously preempting this move. Poor bastards.

What do they expect when they sell at minimal margins and only make their volume rebate on quite a lot of their products.

Might be good for customers but doesn’t help their bottom line.

I think that was their last resort though as K Mart did a similar thing which worked well for KMart.

Retail will never be the same now anyway with so many options for the consumer.

What you are describing is entropy coding, of which the Huffman Code is the optimal method (IIRC). Morse code is efficient but not optimal; not in the least because being a non-prefix code it is necessary to punctuate (add space) between the code symbols for disambiguation. :-B
