The game has quickened up considerably and blokes are a lot bigger than they used to be also. People who say the players today are soft have no idea. 90% of footballers 20 years ago would get chewed up and spat out in today’s game.

Quickened up but skills have gone backwards, the guys 20-30 years ago were natural footballers which made great viewing, less teams meant better quality.

Natural footballers, with great ability yes.... No defending though! I agree with the viewing and they were great games to watch. Those teams now would get destroyed by the systems used now. Add to that most blokes now have on average an extra 2-3 inches in height and run like the wind for the best part of 2 hours. Yes, you put the blokes 20 years ago on the same plans and you’ll get different results. You can’t give them that extra size though and in the contest they’d get absolutely monstered.

Extra size, heard of a bloke called Darren Milane. Hands were strong back then, there was no BS chopping the arms rule. Walker, Jenkins would of been so far out of their depth as key forwards

I don’t agree sorry mate. I would love it to be true, my club was relevant back then.

You just can't compare era's even how close in time they are when you think of it really. For me the glory days were from when I started watching back in the mid 80's up until probably the mid 00's. Players were exciting, the footy was pure and the rules were simple.

so youre saying pretty much until Roos and his Swans stuffed the game forever?
Geelong and the Hawks have tried to change the game back for the better but we still have coaches who coach for their careers and to not lose first so the game is still stuffed

Offense brings in memberships
Defence wins premierships...

Hawks were the best defensive side in the Comp over their successful period

In the last 4 games Hawthorn have played they have scored the exact same number of points 87!

Doubt that has ever occurred before

Yeh but they also tried to score occasionally and didnt bore everyone into submission.

Still can't watch Sydney games as neutral, most boring team to watch for over a decade now

Granted its only Round 3, but it seems we have a bit of an early division in the comp

Geelong

Early Daylight

Brisbane
Port
West Coast
GWS

Then a sea of unconvincing mediocrity who've had some moments of looking ''ok'' but some horrible moments too.

Freo
Hawthorn
Gold Coast
St Kilda
Collingwood
Sydney
Adelaide
Richmond
Essendon
Carlton
North
Melbourne

Who out of the mediocre group do you trust to reduce their horrible moments and make up some ground on the top group?

I'll give them St Kilda and Gold Coast, none of the others.

Will win their next 5 IMO
They are doing ok in a lot of areas but get scored against far too easy. If they tidy that up the results will start coming.

Lachie Neale already in to $6 for the Brownlow, would be sitting on minimum of 8 already.
