And St Kilda are 5th

And this puts more pressure on Bolton, other shit teams have turned it around, yet Carlton can't

Give us time. This time last year we'd been beaten by Richmond, lost to GC by 5-6 goals, lost to Collingwood by 4 goals, and were beaten by North by nearly 100pts.

This year our losses were 33, 19, 16 and 2. Yes we're still losing but we're at least in games. Which really should be the sign of improvement.

Last year our percentage was 61% after Rd 4.

The longer McGovern, McKay, Curnow, Cripps, Dow, Walsh etc play with each other the better they'll become. At the moment, it's 4 games of footy. I'm not worried.

To be fair the AFL gave Gold Coast, Fremantle and St Kilda a chance to start the year off :

Gold Coast had - St Kilda, Fremantle, Bulldogs, Carlton

Fremantle had - North, Gold Coast, St Kilda, West Coast

St Kilda had - Gold Coast, Essendon, Fremantle, Hawthorn

The fact they've shared the wins around among themselves couldn't have worked out any better.

St Kilda beat the Gold Coast, Gold Coast beat Fremantle, Fremantle beat St Kilda.

Carlton got Richmond, Port, Sydney and Gold Coast. A bit of a slave to previous glories there. No way should the season start off with Richmond v Carlton. Richmond v Collingwood would have been better. That's not the greatest first month for the wooden spooner but um..revenue?

Don't think you'd get that with a GF replay, or Collingwood v Essendon or Richmond v Coll/Ess? Geez reckon even Melb would draw a huge Rd 1 crowd for a season opener.

Exactly, but it's Carlton and they are drawing that, massive win for the AFL, if Carlton played Richmond in round 7 on a Friday night they'd be lucky to get 50,000 in.

How many years does Franklin have after this? 3?

Reasonable to assume he will probably finish his career in 4th position on the all time goal kickers list.. fair effort.

Yeah if you read closely you'll see I didn't ask why because the answer is obvious. Quite a number of more even match ups would have gotten the same result. My point was it's a bit rough to for the wooden spooner to front up against a top four side in the first round, cop two interstate trips plus a match against the Swans in the first month. Carlton has improved but the draw has done you no favours.

My take on the first five rounds.

Geelong – A good start considering the draw with several issues addressed. A bit tall in the backline though and vulnerable to speed and small crumbing forwards
St Kilda – A better start than expected but haven’t beaten anyone yet. Like Geelong quite tall but that midfield isn’t fooling anyone
Fremantle – A genuine work in progress and the amount of has been a surprise. Anyone who can push the Eagles and roll the Giants away is a fair side. Ross may have done it again. Some handy ins this year.
Collingwood – A really well coached side that can play tempo or fast break footy. Difficult to play. Grundy is a massive force that tends to mask what I believe is an overrated midfield. DeGoey a freak.
Port – Boak and Rockliff in the mids have added some genuine grunt and Lycett is one of the recruits of the season. The young players have outdone Geelong in this area. A rejuvenated list that should go on to make the eight.
GWS Giants – A very impressive win at Geelong followed by a puzzling loss to the Dockers. I think these guys are a genuine premiership chance with Cameron at his peak and an absolute gun midfield. Mummy a big inclusion. Top four but might need top two to salute.
Essendon – Their early season slumber only lasted two weeks this year. Very quick on the spread but a little weak in the ruck. A fair gap between their best and worst.
West Coast – The inclusion of Gaff has destabilised their midfield setup and the departure of Lycett is a problem as now Vardy is in a form slump. Very well coached so I expect them to be about the place once again but right now a little vulnerable.
Brisbane – Brisbane need to adapt quickly to the fact that their defensive weaknesses have been studied and exposed in recent weeks or this season will peter out. A big challenge ahead for Fagan.
Richmond – Injuries have cruelled the Tigers but in the past two weeks they have shown they aren’t a spent force just yet. A few new players have stood up to fill gaps. They can’t cover Rance though so 5-8 for me, but whose spot do they take?
Gold Coast – Stewie Dew has been awesome at installing some defensive method but it was a massive step backwards at the Croval. Seem to lack scoring potency.
Adelaide – A few too many vanilla options who are just going means that Adelaide is the same. Gold Coast win probably papered cracks. A handy draw will flatter their ladder position this year.
Hawthorn – With Clarkson in charge you can’t underestimate them but they’ve been smashed by injury this season. Their youth is 5hite when compared to several other sides. They are down on fitness as well which means plenty of red time goals conceded.
Western Bulldogs – Their defence is diabolical with Caleb Daniel no less exposed as the last line of defence on repeated occasions in the past few rounds. If they lose the midfield they can’t win and Bevo is playing his midfielders out of position. Strange days indeed.
Carlton – Genuinely on the upside with some genuine stars emerging to assist Cripps. Walsh very impressive and McKay, Dow, Petreski-Seaton, Gibbons all standing up to give the selection committee some welcome headaches. Might start to win a few now they’ve broken that scoring hoodoo.
Sydney – Horse has run out of ideas and Buddy is cooked. The youth haven’t been given any games so they are Deers in the spotlight. Can’t win at home so a long season looms.
Melbourne – The worst coached side in the competition, at least Goodwin has some cattle unlike Brad Scott. Goodwin has not adapted to 6-6-6 and Melbourne are still set up for contested ball. Their defence is shambolic.
North – Where to begin! No spread, very little defensive method, an alarming lack of pace on all lines and badly missing Waite. Their ageing defenders are underdone and they are set up for these blokes and a tagger who can’t get on the field. Genuine spoon chance.

I think only Richmond and Adelaide of teams currently outside the eight can make it. Two St Kilda, Fremantle, Port or Essendon make the eight and I reckon it might be the Dockers and Port.

The Giants are set to lock away one of the AFL’s most in-demand stars, with star midfielder Josh Kelly reportedly signing a monster yet unique new deal that could see him remain in western Sydney for up to 10 years.

While he’s only initially signed for the short-term, the unprecedented, flexible contract reportedly has ample triggers that could tie him to the Giants for life at his discretion.

In a “major announcement”, the Giants on Wednesday are set to confirm a new two-year contract for Kelly. It means he’s turned his back on free agency and the potential of significantly more cash at rival clubs, most notably North Melbourne, St Kilda and Carlton.

But the most intriguing aspect to Kelly’s new agreement is its unprecedented flexibility.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Wednesday morning that Kelly’s new deal includes options to further extend his Giants tenure for anywhere between six to 10 seasons.
PAFC. Forever.

He has signed of for 2 years and lines up nicely for free agency.

2 years on good coin then his next contract will be a monster.

The 2 years also gives him time to see how North and the Saints lists have developed as wel.
