Port Adelaide 2019

Talk on the national game

Re: Port Adelaide 2019

Port Adelaide has opened contract talks with its trio of teenage stars in a bid to lock them to the club beyond 2020.

Each of Connor Rozee (pick 5), Zak Butters (pick 12) and Xavier Duursma (pick 18) are contracted until the end of next season, but foxfooty.com.au understands the Power are eager to extend these deals.

Butters is believed to be the closest to putting pen to paper of the trio, while discussions relating to Duursma have ramped up in recent weeks.

Rozee and Duursma have already been rewarded with Rising Star nominations, while Butters is in the top 20 in the league for goal assists and appears almost certain to be nominated in the future.

Somewhat complicating matters for Port Adelaide is the fact all three are managed by different agents.

Rozee is looked after by Ben Williams of Players Ink Sport & Media, Butters is managed by Mark Kleiman from TLA, while Dave Trotter from Hemisphere Management Group represents Duursma.

While two-year extensions appear the most likely scenario for all three players, finding the right price is a delicate balance between rewarding performance and predicting value years down the track.

That all three are first round selections carries significant weight. But as managers jostle for the best possible deal for their clients, a situation could arise which sees an agent attempt to negotiate based on the worth of another player’s deal.

Broadly speaking, this is not unusual to compare the worth of players, but this situation where three first round selections come in and immediately show their worth is rare.

According to a manager not connected with this particular scenario, the desire for healthy contract extensions could easily create a game of “contract espionage” behind the scenes.

What is clear is Port is keen to lock away all three and potentially announce them at all once.

As per the collective bargaining agreement, top 20 draft selections from 2018 receive a base salary of $95,000, plus $4,000 per match.

If they play 11 or more senior games, Rozee, Butters and Duursma will receive a $6,000 bonus. The maximum bonus beyond that is $12,000.

Next year all three could be in line for a big jump, especially if they remain key planks in Ken Hinkley’s side this year.

For top 20 selections who have played 17 or more AFL games in their first season, their second year base deal jumps up to $130,000, while match payments rise from $4,000 to $5,000.

Given Rozee, Butters and Duursma have played all of Port’s six matches so far, this scenario is very much in play for 2020.

But beyond 2020 — when their new deals kick in — expect the trio to each be earning upwards of $400,000 and perhaps even more if their form continues.

Somewhere between 15-20 players per club are on guaranteed arrangements with add-ons (as opposed to heavily incentivised) and there is little doubt by the time Rozee, Butters and Duursma enter their third years they will be ranked in the top bracket of Port’s list.

List is looking ok moving forward, but really need Hayes to step up for when Ryder is gone.

Lack of young key position players a conern as well. Clurey developing very well, but not much depth in defensive talls, similary with forwards, not much back up to Marshall, especially if Frampton isnt selected, in order to fast-track his development.

Lienert and Howard are developing, or better.

Speaking to a couple of people inside the club they're happy with how Frampton is coming along over the last 18 months but even more so with Ladhams. From what I've seen Ladhams looks the more complete player and will be ahead of Frampton in selection discussions at the moment I would think.

Dixon and Jonas 28, Lycett 26, Clurey Lienert 25, Howard 23, Frampton 22, Ladhams 21, Marshall 20, Hayes 19, other than Westhoff and Ryder our talls have at least 3 or more years in them. The important part will be making either Frampton or Ladhams play regular minutes in the line up sometime next year to allow Ryder and Westhoff to exit the year after.

Given our 2018 drafting you would think this years draft will focus on talls in the early rounds ( we still have a 1st and 2nd rounder this year ) and our 4 4th round picks will be points for father-son Jackson Mead.

A fair few of their best players haven’t got long to go and probably won’t be there for their next real tilt but have some good kids coming through and a excellent draft last year

Look at the numbers this year and R.Gray, Ryder and Westhoff haven't had a huge impact.

What’s the news on Dixon?
I’ve heard he’s struggling big time and is well behind in his rehabilitation.

Given the injury he has surely he won’t play this year or if he does won’t make any impact.

He had a clean out on the ankle about 4 weeks ago, started running on the Alt G treadmill last week and this week has done some light jogging on the ground. I think he'll have another run next week given he pulls up of from this week's increased work load.

He's behind where they expected him to be back at Xmas but, big bloke, bad break, they never really knew where he'd be and when.

Right up there on field, perhaps the most important off it.

Drew a line in the sand when the Geelong cavalry rode into town in 2012 and decided to stay with Port Adelaide. It will, in the grand scheme of things, live with me as one of the most important moments in our clubs history.

He had every reason to head home to Jan Juc, his Mum had been widowed when he lost his father when he was 16, Port had become irrelevant on the national stage, Geelong were at the top of their game having won two flags in 5 years and at 24 the move home would have been the easy decision. He didn't go. Neither did Jackson Trengove.

He's a pillar of our community work, his work with the Childhood Cancer Association goes (not completely) unnoticed, he's righted the SPP ship off field and has been a massive influence on every young player that has had the opportunity to see his professionalism when it comes to preparing himself and his training standards. He is not just a leader, he sets the standards in many areas.

On field, I would say Wanganeen, Tredrea and R.Gray are the 3 best players we have had represent the club at AFL level, in the next breathe Travis Boak gets mentioned.

This is why i would have him ranked high alone - he stuck fat when the going wasn't good, especially when he had every chance to go to a more successful club and potentially for more money..

You're right but I was more along the lines of players we offered a lifeline, ones that other clubs were happy enough to offload.

One of my best mates played for the Power when they started up, he was telling me at the time that they chased Matthew Bishop as he always played well against us, he was quite serviceable over time.
