You're confusing miss management with player retention.

Anyway, you're probably right, all new clubs will struggle with lack of identity. 8)

Hard to fathom, isn't it?

Genuine question.

1: Do you think the GC suffer from being a non football location therefore have to pay significant 'overs' to attract players away from the footballing meccas of Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth. Is this overweighed by the fact they are the Gold Coast one of the countries most iconic locations?

2: Personally if I had the choice of playing for GC or Essendon, Saints, West Coast, Port I would pick going to a 'football town'

Almost another version of the Sydney Cost of Living issue.

1: No.
2: You'd think that any young bloke who spends part of their day training, part of their day in the gym, a bit of study and the rest is leisure time, Gold Coast would be my choice of destinations as a young lad.

There's something skew wiff up the top, I don't think McKenna was the ideal inaugural coach, Rocket was definitely not the ideal replacement with a young squad and Stewie Dew has taken over the bronze medallists of the para-olympics.

I'd love to see a team made up of the players that have left, they are an absolute basket case, to think that I actually half supported them for the first few years and thought they could potentially be something big, then GWS came in full of skinny kids getting belted by 20+ goals continuously and I didn't think they'd last 5 years.

Walk the streets in anonymity or get mobbed having a coffee? The first part is exactly why Franklin went to Sydney ( and the COLA money ).

Sacking McKenna remains their biggest mistake to this day.

You win the flag in 2012 and 12 months later sign Franklin to a $10m 10 year deal and you think you're struggling? How out of touch can you be.

I'm glad the umpires took 2016 off you.

Replacing him with Rocket was IMO.

McKenna needed more time, not doubting that, they finished as high as they have done the year he got the arse.

A more seasoned coach from the beginning is what they needed.

AFL need to send David King and Paul Roos up there to fix them and get those two out of the media.

Can they take Dunstall, Brereton, Dal Santo Pavlich etc with them too pleeeze!

I'd rebadge them as the Northern Suns and split their 11home games next season into 4 games at Metricon, 4 games in Darwin and 3 games in Alice Springs. That would then give the fans there a sense of a home team to barrack for rather than just have 2 AFL teams lob in and take your money in return for one game and some promotional pics before and after the game. I'd give the entire NT to the Northern Suns as their recruiting zone so all the talented NT and island kids can live together in either Darwin or Gold Coast rather than live as individuals in a strange city like Melbourne.

Was thinking about this in a different context - how many of the players that gone to other clubs and been reliable or developed or professional, ie what the buying clubs would have been expecting if they got a player from another club?

Prestia, Brandon Matera, Saad maybe?

Compared to
Lynch and Richmond players commenting on him not having developed certain basics (although this seems to be turnign around),
Perhaps Charlie DIxon is/was a simialr case,
Steven May turning up unfit,
Kolodajshni (sp) at Melbourne,
Harley Bennell,
Josh Caddy went through Geelong,
Zac Smith
Weller

Ablett, Lyons, Prestia, O'Meara, Saad, Dixon, Smith, Kolodjashni, May, Lynch to name a few make GC a better side right now, no question.
