I think Bancroft's close in fielding will save him, plus him being a right hander, he wouldn't want another set of failures with the bat though.

How much did Siddle's line and length help the other bowlers? He was tidy and the wicket of Root in the first dig will carry some weight.

Pattinson you'd think will also be safe after getting two of the first three wickets.

If an opening bat is getting picked because he's good at short leg we're rooted.

And the right-handed factor, take it all into context please.

PS: You don't realise how hard it was for me to endorse Bancroft.

Agree. Langer has said on numerous times he wants to make the team harder to get into than out of.

The right hand factor will play a huge role especially if the pitches are going to have great footmarks for the spinners to work into. If we bat fourth with all our left handers even Moe Ali might pick up a wicket ha.

Pattinson out for Starc I think.
They will manage Pattinson after his long lay off

I think this move will happen in the 3rd test. Reckon Lords and it's 'hill' is perfect for Pattinson.

He only bowled 8 overs in the second innings. Surely 8 overs in 11 days isn't too much of a workload.

Do the international umpires get the chance to prepare by doing a first-class game at these grounds with local umpires who can assist them with local conditions? Why just come in for one test? They seem to be on a hiding to nothing with the current set-up.

Just dumb it down to the good old days somewhat, when in England, have English umpires etc. Or still, one from each nation, with all the reviews and technology they hardly need to be doing neutral, surely just getting an Ashes test is enough incentive for an umpire to get it right, you'd sooner get a clean card for the future than ruin your reputation.

Yep. Make sure the financial incentive is significant enough to want to umpire tests over first class and im sure the umpires find being neutral easy.

Maybe a performance system on top of their retainer would improve the quality. No decisions overturned = $$$$$, XXX amount of decisions do get overturned and they lose a portion of their pay. hahahaha.

Exactly right, he should be fine.
With no injuries I'd be pretty disappointed if we don't go into the second test unchanged.

I'd be disappointed if we kept Bancroft in the side. Can't leave them alone early and is a nick waiting to happen.

Yeah, must have missed his first innings where he looked clueless against the moving ball :)

Give him one more test then drop him if he bats poorly.

I wouldn't have had him in the side to start with but I don't think they will drop him after 1 test considering we won.

Think Bancroft v Harris dilemma might become clearer after the Worcestershire clash this week. Bancroft as a short leg is indeed capable of manufacturing a wicket from nothing and is RH but that doesnt seal the deal.

Pattinson should stay. His energy is high around the field and he is the best bat of our bowlers...prob the closest thing we have to an all rounder.

Siddles selection is interesting and you could sensethe critics were about to unload on the non selection of Starc and Hazelwood if we lost. But the role Siddle had was not one that Starc could have reliably handled. Maybe Hazelwood, but he needs to have a big one this week to show hes back in the groove.

I cant stand Siddle but have to admit he played a very solid role in that victory.

With Pattinson and Cummins you have two bowlers who imo are at their best when they can attack with both field placings and line and lengths. Not only did Siddle sure up the other end which im sure was his role but he looked threatening throughout, especially in the second innings. If he cant get 5cm of movement out the pitch he can be dangerous.

If Siddle was to go, he needs to be replaced by Hazelwood. I don't think you can get away with Cummins, Pattinson, Starc. If you tried that it means Cummins or Pattinson have to become your stock bowlers. Cummins is our most dangerous wicket taker and you will break Pattinson if you expect him to be the workhorse.

I think they might give the total a shake

In theory they're a chance but they would need to smash the Edgbaston highest ever successful 4th innings chase by 100+ runs according to a graphic they showed last night. These records are usually in place for a reason so therefore they likely won't come close. Ali who to be fair is garbage was getting some big turners happening last night, Lyon will probably go through them like a knife through butter.
