Absolutely hate this, only logic can be that they believe he will be more valuable on the pitch on the third test.

For mine though he is easily in our best 3 pacemen, lets go in for the kill whilst in-front.

I guess the sports scientists have to stay in a job somehow.

Surely Starc replaces Patterson. Hazlewood and Siddle are not both required.

Mitch Johnson preempted the switch between Starc and Patto 24 hrs ago saying how the different angles of a leftie with the slope are invaluable. And a dry surface underneath means Lyon will enjoy bowling into Starcs footmarks.

The issue with Starcs bowling is he is likely to have that bad over that releases the pressure for the English bats. Patto had an over just like that in the second innings and was replaced straight away. Reckon it was his last over bowled...prob didnt help.

REB's Ashes Tour 2019 :

Book Review: Steve Smith's Men - Behind Australian Cricket's Fall; Lemon, Geoff (2018), Hardie Grant Books.

Mrs REB knows I'm a big reader and at first glance I didn't think much of this offering. Here I was, about to go on the Ashes trip of a lifetime and bang there's a book about something many Australian fans would prefer to forget about, the "Sandpapergate" affair.

One of the reasons that Smith, Bancroft and Warner were dealt with so harshly in comparison to others who "doctored" the ball was because the fans, you and I, were appalled that we would cheat in this way. This is something Pakistan, England or South Africa would do, not us...but there it was in all its glory right in our faces and it pissed us off. Our public indignation, that sense of overwhelming disappointment was what ultimately drove the bans.

As I delved into the pages of this book I soon found out a lot of things I didn't know about Steve Smith and Dave Warner in particular. Lemon isn't trying to drag anyone down but he hasn't written a puff piece here and this book is all the better for it.

Warner, the complex, multifaceted individual with a ferocious will to win is described, but not fully explained. Lemon suggests it is difficult to impossible to do so. Smith is painted as a man who is all Cricket and not a lot else and in retrospect not the best choice as captain. Unfortunately for Smith he starred in an era when alternative options weren't thick on ground.

The cricket side of the story began at the commencement of the previous Ashes series and how the resurrection of the sledging monster has been (and continues to be) a key element in Australian success. Australia won the series, Smith was physically and mentally drained and Warner was reinstated as chief "attack dog".

By the time the fateful South African tour began, Smith was cooked as Greg Chappell was before he ordered that underarm delivery and "attack dog" Dave Warner delegated "maintenance" duty to his faithful protege Cameron Bancroft. The rest was history.

There are also illuminating chapters on the culture of Cricket Australia (not the travel office ) and Australian cricket in general. Once again Lemon pulls no punches and I don't think he will be getting too many Christmas cards from people mentioned in this book.

Overall, I'd recommend this to any cricket fan who doesn't mind bad language, and isn't an unquestioning fan of our cricket team and its broader administrative arm.

Yep. And this is why I think we're more likely to win the series without him.

We won the last test because even when Root and Burns were on top, we didn't bleed runs. England's first innings score was good, but with erratic bowling, would likely have been 500, meaning a draw would've been the best we could achieve from there on in.

Maintaining pressure on the batsmen is so important in Ashes series, particularly in England.

Personally I would be going with Hazelwood and Siddle and really tests the English batters patience (which I think they will fail)

That would be the last combo I'd go with, they will get used of the same style and would benefit them for the remaining tests if the pair were to play together again.

I don't think Hazelwood will get a guernsey, Starc will be lining up I'd imagine.

Even though Siddle scored some runs at Edgbaston, our tail looks a little long with no Starc or Pattinson in there.

I agree Starc will probably play but I don't think it will work.

You can get use to the 'same' bowling all you like but on the English pitches all it takes is one well directed delivery to nip back or away a few centre metres and your done.

Keep in mind as well Hazelwood is 15cm taller than Siddle and probably balls from a much greater height so there levels of bounce etc are completely different.

I think these English batters are as inpatient as they come and rely on boundary, a good ball is still a good ball and requires the batsmen to take risk to hit a boundary off. Starc gives away far too many non risk boundary balls imo.

Just leave it to the goat to get things done, he has mind ****** the poms.

Hazlewood and Siddle are too similar for fine, Cummins must be the tearaway if they go with that combination.

Pattinson getting a rest after a fairly long break is a worry, the 2 day gaps I can understand but not a 10 dayer.

People looking at the 8 days between the first and second tests, but not the 3 days between the 2nd and 3rd. Clearly patto isn't going to play both 2 and 3. If the selectors think he's a better fit for the third than the second (or his replacement is better at Lords than the 3rd test) then I'm happy to back them in. No issues for mine with Patto being rested as required - assuming he plays the third test obviously.

As for Hazlewood or Starc to come in, Starc clearly provides a bigger point of difference to Siddle than Josh, however I still think Josh is different enough from Peter that its fine to play both. Josh will get the ball to do a bit off the seam no dramas. Siddle is more your grinder keeping it tight. Starc's point of difference while being a big + for him, isn't enough for mine to overcome the negative of him leaking runs. As others have said, the Poms want to hit boundaries and get themselves out if they don't hit one for a few overs. Josh's added control over Starc outweighs the lack of variation in our attack.

I'm backing the selectors in, looking forward to tonight's action!

I hope so.

This team isn't shock and awe with either bat or ball (look at Warner current patience shown)

Grind these one day specialists down and make them earn every single run because they don't have the ticker or patience to last the distance.
