Port v Norwood would attract close to 50 thousand, no sheep though.

You blokes had your chance in 2014, at Adelaide Oval.nThe figure was 39,000 if I remember right.
Maybe could've gotten more, but from where I was sitting there were simply no Port fans about.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Lucky the inception of the reserves sides has led to such great success for the Crows and Port in the AFL, imagine how poorly they'd be performing under the "old" system.

It is a great point. I think as bias as we are to the SANFL we could all appreciate the AFL teams want to have all their players under the same banner BUT if we are perfectly honest the stats have shown that it is has no direct correlation with success and may actually not improve a clubs performance.

Further to that look at how quick Brisbane have rised back to the top of the AFL yet their reserve players are arguably learning their trade in the lowest standard of competition amongst all AFL teams.

If Port or the Crows wanted to win the GF they would.

Sanderson and Trigg had an agenda to blame not having a reserves side for their AFL failings, now they have been found out as frauds and we are stuck with their delusions as our reality

Yep .. Early-Mid 2000's Victorian clubs and media were bemoaning the fact the Crows and Power had an advantage in development with their players in the SANFL. Not long after the AFL successfully leant on the SANFL to reduce the Salary Cap. Not long after that the AFL clubs successfully lobbied for their own reserves sides.

Completely understandable Crows and Port would want total control of their reserves players, but not sure how much benefit they've derived from it when the competition has weakened?

A few over there were keenly looking at our arrangement in the '90s, well before the AFL Reserves were dissolved.

Correct. Pre Trigg and Sanderson an AFL report found having the players play in dispersed SANFL teams was an advantage the Crows/Power had. Both Malcolm Blight and Neil Craig had commented on it as an advantage and the best methodology for player development. Not so sure that there's no correlation The teams won three premierships between them pre AFL reserves and have been pretty crap ever since (excluding one GF appearance by the Crows). One of the arguments "for" supposedly was going to be player retention, I can't see how that's eventuated.

I remember speaking to retired CDFC and ex Brisbane Lions player Tom Collier and whilst at Brisbane he really disliked playing in the AFL reserves system (for Brisbane) for many reasons, thought the old system we had was better for players.

Easy. Trade Port Melbourne and Williamstown for the Ravens and Power reserves. So long and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

So Sydney and Brisbane reserves teams will play in Victoria, Victorian actual VFL teams will play in SA...hmm yeah well that's about the logic at the moment so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Would have no issues with that. 2 very proud stand alone VFL clubs. Whilst they may have had AFL affiliation in the past they have stood on their own 2 feet for a while now.

Agree, couldn't see a single issue with a couple of stand alone state league clubs entering the comp. Remove the AFL reserves and I could easily a SANFL resurgence.

Would make for a great away trip.

its exactly what the SANFL needs and I have been advocating for years, make the SANFL a genuine 2nd tier competition that allows for players to be semi professional and have long careers if or when they don't make the top tier.

It can still develop players for the AFL but be a genuine seperate competition at the same time.
