Marnie has clearly passed his examination. A genuine Test batsman mentality which seems to be scarce in modern times. Happy to occupy time. And brave.
Big question marks over Archer today. Many deliveries he just rolled his arm over and he looked agitated... probably unbelieving that he could go more than 20 balls and not take a wicket.

Got to admit last summer I could fathom why the select Laba, clearly I was wrong. He has grit, determination, patience and fair bit of confidence as well. Definitely has the early the right to occupy the number 3 spot in the batting line up when Smith comes back next test.

Really need to get the lead over 300, if we could scrape to 350 that would be amazing.

Apparently Root dropped a sitter in the evening session. What a day for the skipper.

Another woeful batting display by us, been so many over the past few years. Worst part is there is not much waiting in the wings. Full credit to the aussies, it is an exceptional bowling attack. Enjoy retaining the ashes.

Great to see Labuschage contribute once again, the stint of county cricket before the series has obviously done him the world of good. Frustrating for Wade to get a start and not being able to cash in and another standard Khawaja innings and dismissal, really needs to do something to stop getting out like that!

Hopefully today we can go beyond a 300 plus lead as much as possible.

The TMS Podcast from yesterday's play on the BBC website is worth a listen, Jonathan Agnew gives a warning at the start about there being an angry Yorkshireman.

I was sceptical on Lampshade playing as I knew he had made County runs but they were in the 2nd division. Hopefully he goes on in the series and can get himself a ton or two.

Langer has built a strong resilience with this team. If they are down, they aren’t down for long. When they strike they are very potent.

Get Carey and Smith in to this line up. Open with Warner and Khawaja. Then drop Paine and Harris.

Was a good listen, enjoyed cook talking about the differences between him and ravi bopara coming through at the same time and how his lack of shots made it easier for him compared to ravi. Geoffrey going on about roy was classic, wish they just let him have a huge rant about it

It has bounce and carry.
Perfect pitch
Average batting

Perfect?

No, perfect is Adelaide in the 90s and 00s. This isn't perfect. The ball is hooping and darting about all over the place. Great for cricket don't get me wrong but not a 450 pitch.

Perfect pitch, average batting? Have you seen how much the ball is moving off the deck? The only reason England weren’t rolled for under 50 was because at times the ball was doing too much. Exceptional bowling on a seaming pitch.

I like it, although I'm not sure Khawaja has many more runs in him at international level.

Agreed, Cook pretty much said what Geoffrey did, play within your limitations and you'll prosper. Just said it in a tad more circumspect way. He generally didn't stray from what he was comfortable with and reaped the benefits. You can tell he's a deep thinker on the game, he'd be an interesting bloke to have a chinwag with. Geoffrey for all his faults at least gives you an honest opinion, I enjoy listening to him. He's a no bullshit bloke. Not even Aggers could pull Geoffrey back when he started on Roy, absolute gold.

Still think we need another 70 or 80 on the board

The English batting lineup still worries me, they have some explosive batsman in there and some are due

Just need Root to get amongst the runs and someone to support Stokes and they have the ability to chase relatively big totals

The pitch surely will be alot better on day 3 as well and probably not as much movement.

Way the Aussie media etc are carrying on the Ashes coming home are a foregone conclusion.

I'm not so sure as yet

Less movement might not be a bad thing, more likely to edge them.

I would want 350+ lead, if Wade and Labas were still in at stumps I would be calling it game over but if Poms roll us for a lead less than 300 then they would have some belief. Stokes the danger man with the bat
Dave Warner will be missed!

They won’t make 200.
Only 2 test quality batsman in their side and that is Root and Stokes. Root is so far out of form it isn’t funny and Stokes is quality but prone to lapses. The rest are park cricket standard, hell they even had to hide Buttler at 7 he is that bad. Burns shows some fight but Denly and Roy are scared to be out there

Two brilliant bowling efforts yesterday - Hazelwood and Stokes.

Hazelwood set up that innings no doubt. I thought Cummins was a too short of a length a little too often in his first spell.

What a great effort by Stokes. Even if he only went for another single per over the game would be over. As it is he has only just kept them in it, but they would have to roll the last four wickets for less than 20.

Labuschagne was obviously lucky against him, but that's cricket - the previous two innings he hardly played a false shot and got out in two unlucky/unusual ways. All the talk is about how tough the bowlers have it in back to back tests, but he has played three back-to-the-wall innings in just six days, perhaps we saw in the last hour how mentally draining that might be.

Unfortunately Paine is just about had it. Still captaining well enough (bringing on Lyon when Burns was looking comfortable against the quicks but before he was truly into his innings was the proactivity we needed when trying to defend the small total even if it didn't get the wicket). Maybe Pattinson at 7, Paine at 8, but it's not quite the Australian way to back down like that.

Anything over 320 will be enough. Root obviously has the ability, and these are the innings that make champions.

I’d like at least another 100 runs
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I also think we need a lead of 350+. The pitch will be in good nick and might have settled down.

Also Stokes opening the bowling today with Broad ????? Archer???
