It wasn't voluntary it was forced on a skills and needs basis. I have a relatively young team that needs his experience. He is (from an age point of view) still a couple of years from retirement and I need(ed) his expertise to help the young Engineers.

Ive seen people like this quit/retire to shove it up the employer, only for more redundancies to be offered in the next 12 months, sometimes its better to just stick around, esp in the current environment.

This only encourages some to take them when not genuinely sick.

Absolutely, our factory did this for a while and blokes were cashing in big time, the same didn't apply for office staff though

Do you get a full days pay or is it a nominal amount?

In my job, in recent years, if you have a sick day no one does your work and you just end up with 2 days worth of work when you return, so you end up turning up to work unless you are completely stuffed.

Yep, unused sick leave generally not paid out unless EBA etc. However I think workers should receive some compensation if they have it when they leave.
Otherwise, when workers quit the last few weeks they just cash in on the sickies.
I probably have close to 50 days....

All of a sudden i dont feel well...

That's my problem, I've gotta spend half the day fixing other people's f*** ups if I throw a sickie, I only take them when I've planned going to the doctor etc.

The reverse is also true though. People are sick, and instead of staying home and resting up, they come to work cause they want to keep the sick day up their sleeve and get it paid out when they retire.
So they come to work crook, do bugger all, stay sick for longer, and often pass on their sickness to other people. And then the company still needs to pay them out as a reward at the end of their employment!

Unfortunately no system is perfect.

I have another employee who would rather take annual leave days when she is sick then spend money seeing a dr to get a dr cert for a sick day.

My boss always complains about how long he has to wait and how much he has to stump up to see his GP. He often waits up to 2 weeks.

I can get into my bulk billing clinic to see my GP more often than not same day ( If I call first thing or book on line ) or at worst next day.

Don't people look around at their options?

$20 for a sick certificate from any pharmacy.
No questions asked.

One of my staff does it and there’s not much I can do about it.
