Steven Silvagni to leave Carlton after the draft.

Silvagni on the outer over the recruiting of Betts (not part of the youth resurgance) and for not wanting Butler or Ellis despite the club chasing them all season.

Too many cooks.

Butler and Ellis are hacks so no great loss in not getting them

Betts is worth it purely for the off field benefits

The marketing department and board would have had a fair say in it too, I'd imagine.

I've been thinking about the SOS situation and realistically we had little chance of getting Papley. So going into the trade period we would've had (in my order)

Papley > Betts > Ellis > Butler > others I may have missed

Ellis was always gone. We needed a crumbing forward and he was a high floating forward which worked well for Richmond because of their structure but not for us. Butler, not sure. We could've used him but I'm not sure he would've been as good as Papley or Betts.

Papley would've been the 'bomb'. However, what do you pay? Do you bend over or do you wait and see. For me, it's a situation of 'get them now' but you also don't want the club to be seen as an easy target going forward. So I'm happy with our stance. Let's have a look at the end of 2020.

Betts is the happy medium. You know what you're going to get - and for a really high pick, I'm happy with that. If the ball is moved quickly he'll be more likely to get goals rather than Adelaide's stagnant ball movement. And he will bring players into the game. He'll also provide on field leadership for McKay and C Curnow (if he gets on the ground). He has history with McGovern too, so I am not sure if that helps or hinders us!

I'm really disappointed that SOS might not see our success but I know he'll be responsible for it going forward, no matter what. He's had to shuffle deck chairs to get us 22 on the field each week but overall he's moved us forward which is all any list manager can be asked of!

The marketing department would not be involved in a single football list decision, they wouldn’t have even been close to getting a calendar meeting request for such a decision.

Their role would be purely to maximise the cards they are dealt.

So we finished up getting Martin and Newnes for nothing, Betts, Pittonet and then added Kemp, Philp, Ramsay and Honey.

Can't complain!

I was desperate for Port to nab this bloke with our Bergman pick - has all the traits to be an outright star.

My only solace right now, is the fact that Gawn aside (no one else comes to mind), no player who has done an ACL at junior level has gone on to become a star at AFL level.

Was a good to very good intercept defender prior to doing it again at the Dees, but not yet a star.

I thought Joel Selwood did an ACL the year before he was drafted.? He goes ok
