A few months ago, after getting the car serviced, I was warned that there was an oil leak from a gasket into the spark tubes. I was cautioned that this would cause performance issues and should be seen to ASAP.

Yesterday, driving along quite happily, the engine simply died, taking the power steering with it. Fortunately I was able to coast into a side street without hitting anything, where the car was restarted without problem.

Is instantaneous engine death likely to be a symptom of an oil leak into the spark tubes? Hadn't noticed any other problems to that point.

JFTR, I booked in the car to fix the leak this morning. Won't happen until the new year though (bloody Xmas...)

In a word, yes, but it could be a myriad of other things, too.

If the plugs are oily and aren't firing then no bang in the cylinder no power.

Yeah, I thought as much. Though I'm surprised it went straight from clean running to engine death; no misfiring or sluggishness. Cheers.

Fair enough, my Falcon had a chip issue which made the car just stop but would restart straight away, apparently very common. Has something to do with the ignition. Ford quoted me $1600, Jim’s (or VIP) locksmith put a none genuine part in it for about $300. Took 10 minutes.

My first car, a Datsun Bluebird, did this, for the whole time I owned it, I always had to drive in the lane closest to the kerb because it would cut out at will.

It even did it ON the SA/VIC border once.

Every mechanic I ever spoke to about it could never figure it what it was either. Someone flogged it in the end, which really was a relief

Definitely a one liner type operator.
He’s ruined my perception of him after seeing him on tv, he tries too hard to be funny constantly, it just doesn’t work, he doesn’t look the type either.

Because he can sit in front of his laptop writing and rewriting his joke to get it to stick.
