Rating the Recruits for 2020

SANFL clubs have been busy securing a host of quality signings ahead of the 2020 Statewide Super League season. With several former AFL stars poised to play in the SANFL next year, find out who will prove to be the difference-making recruits according to ZAC MILBANK.

1- Ryan Bastinac (Norwood)
Bastinac looms as a difference-making recruit after averaging 31 disposals per game for the Brisbane Lions in the NEAFL last year. A winner of the Lions’ Reserves best-and-fairest for the past two years, the 28-year-old captained the Lions’ undefeated 2019 campaign in the NEAFL. Will be used by Norwood coach Jarrod Cotton in the centre square where he will be given every chance to shine.

Douglas will be determined to steer clear of the medical room after managing 13 games (9 AFL and 4 SANFL) in 2019.

Expect Wright to use Broadbent through the midfield more than he experienced at Alberton while he will also be a composed head across half-back. Uses the ball well by foot in constructing the play from defence.

North Adelaide has elevated Alex Spina into the role of Statewide Super League captain for the 2020 season.

Acting as a vice-captain for the past two seasons, the 24-year-old replaces premiership skipper Max Thring, who announced his retirement last year.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, Spina said he was extremely proud to be handed the baton as the Roosters’ captain given the names before him on the club’s honour board.

Now with 102 League games under his belt, Spina felt he was primed to tackle the challenge in unison with new coach Jacob Surjan, who has also risen up the ranks to replace premiership mentor Josh Carr.

Spina – who has been involved at Prospect since playing in the Under-16s in 2010 – will be joined in North’s three-man leadership group by joint vice-captains Andrew Moore and Tom Schwarz.

Moore, who will rejoin the Roosters after playing 14 League matches from 2010-2013 while AFL-listed with Port Adelaide, will provide Spina with great experience having captained Box Hill Hawks to the VFL premiership in 2018.

Schwarz continues to impress North officials with his professionalism on and off the field, rated as the club’s best player in the 2018 Statewide Super League Grand Final and posting a top three finish in last year’s Barrie Robran Medal.

Spina, who said Surjan was more relaxed as he settled into his new role, has rated the club’s 2020 list as the strongest in his tenure, with key recruits Billy Hartung, Robbie Young, Kym Lebois, Harrison Wigg and Cameron Hewett all impressing on the training track.

Congratulations to Luke Habel on his appointment as Central District captain for 2020. He will be ably assisted in the Leadership Group by Jarrod Schiller and Troy Menzel. Trent Goodrem and Kyle Jenner gave great service in their roles and it is great that they are still continuing on as players.

The SA Football Commission wishes to advise that Tom Zorich, Louise Small and Rob Kerin have been elected to serve as members of the Commission for the next three years.

SANFL League Directors met tonight to vote on the three vacant elected positions on the Commission.

The SA Football Commission – the governing body for football in South Australian – comprises seven elected members and two appointed members.

Mr Zorich, first elected to the Commission in 2011, returns for a further three-year term. He is a business owner, past player and former Chairman of Central District Football Club.

Ms Small, a business manager and former Adelaide Thunderbirds assistant coach and State League netballer, was appointed to the Commission for a one-year term in 2019. She will now serve as an elected Commissioner until 2023.

Mr Kerin is a former Premier of South Australia, SANFL Community Football League Director and member and chair of numerous Boards.

Former Chair of the Commission John Olsen AO did not seek a further three-year term. The Commission will meet this month to appoint a new chairperson.
