Fundraiser for Lightning McQueen

Postby Wedgie » Tue Dec 31, 2019 12:51 pm

As most of us would be aware from the "Things that make you sad" thread Lightning McQueen has had a shocking run of luck with his son getting meningitis whilst on the Gold Coast requiring surgery and LM having to fly up there to be with his son over Xmas.
There's been some good news finally in that a transfer to the WCH from Queensland has been organised but as most of us would well be aware the last few weeks would have taken a shocking toll on both LM's wallet and emotions.
LM is always there for other posters when they're down on their luck and I think the very least we could do is raise some funds for LM to help out a bit to help out a little with the huge hit he would have taken financially recently or even just some pocket money to allow him to let his hair down and start to feel like a normal person again after the horrendous ordeal he's been through.

I considered a gofundme page but Booney pointed out to me they take 15% so its best just to organise ourselves. What I propose is people PM me and I'll give them my bank details where I will collect the funds and eventually transfer them across to LM when we have a final amount.
When people send me money I'll update this post with the amounts and total so everyone can see everything is above board.
I'll just list the amounts and dates received as we don't want this becoming a chest beating exercise (as also pointed out by Booney, he's full of good ideas!).

Please give generously to help out a brother and PM me to get the process started. Every little or large amount will help, they all add up!

Cheers.

Great to see we've got past the $400 barrier today, only the 3rd day!
A great reaponse so far from the SAFooty community, it would be nice to get over $500 though so keep the PMs/transfers coming through, it all adds up! :)

Wow, I’ve stayed away from here and other social media since our transfer as I needed some downtime to let it all hit me as I had a chance to have others do a couple of bedside shifts with him.

The support I was given up there by friends, family, fellow posters and hospital staff was very overwhelming but at the end of the day we were just stuck in a hospital room each night, that was very difficult as each day he had to be assessed yet again and it was always a nervous wait.

I am extremely grateful and blown away, I was unable to buy my kids Christmas presents just yet as I get paid monthly, I got my son a few things so he had something to open up on the day but I had to be very careful as the costs were adding up and I thought I’d just worry about all that when we got back.

Here we were Monday waiting to see if we were getting relocated for the next 5 weeks and then at 5:15pm they told us we could get transferred to the WCH if I could organise flights for the next day.

Thank you all so much, It will certainly go a long way to making it feel like we’ve had a Christmas.

If anyone still wants to contribute send me a pm and I'll just forward the money to LM as it comes through and will keep updating the original post with the amounts received and sent.

I am truly humbled, I’m waiting for my lads 12 o’clock meds and then we’re heading into the city to get a few things to make the rest of his stay in hospital more enjoyable, picking the daughter up too to give her a belated Christmas gift.

It’s been one hell of a ride, it hasn’t felt like Christmas at all but we’ll keep positive.

He’s got a bit to go, he has developed liver enzymes and a low white blood cell count caused by the intense antibiotics over a long period so they are going to give us a new plan for that after going through another MRI scan, he has also lost pretty much all of his hearing in his right ear permanently, he’s in good spirits though.

Seeing the colour in him being restored is priceless, it’s from being back in SA, having friends and family drop by is the best medicine.

Thank you everyone for any bit of support, I sometimes don’t know how I coped, I’ve still got shit to deal with to get my own head right, I’m
looking forward to being able to return to work.

You need to build his immune system back up mate
Get some proper advice but Vitamin C, Zinc and chelated magnesium is a good start
Chelated magnesium is the key to getting the body to absorb the vitamins

Probiotics I believe too can hasten the gut health repair after antibiotics

I drop a probiotic every night ( as well as magnesium ) and previous gut health issues have dissipated.

For some reason I nearly always remember to take the Magnesium but forget about the Probiotics #-o

I went to the Apple store earlier and asked if they had any ear buds lol.
Air pods was what I was meaning, just another example that I’m still a bit fried.

Today didn’t go to plan, thought we’d be out For the afternoon by noon, all plans now cancelled and still here as he’s gone to ENT for a while, there’s always tomorrow I guess.

My work has been amazing throughout all of this, they’ve offered counselling for now and when I’m ready to return to work, I’m probably just operating on adrenaline still, it’s a very indescribable experience.

That’s the next chapter and beyond mate, it appears as though he’ll not be able to have anything citric moving forward, has twice since the diagnosis and has thrown up profusely on both occasions, not uncommon apparently.

Mate, I knew f*** all about meningitis previously, I’ve been told be several surgeons etc. that he’s extremely lucky to still be here.

The name “fusobacterium nechrophorum” will never escape me, that was the strain that got him, extremely rare.

I don’t know how long before it stops scaring me, I shed a tear every morning when I stop at the Nailsworth Hungry Jacks to get him a muffin and hash brown on my way in to be with him.
Every time I’m in the shower I have flashbacks of conversations I’ve had over the past month with various surgeons, neurologists, paediatricians and social workers, the enormity hits me like a ton of bricks, I thought I was a strong person but it really has torn me to shreds as a parent watching what your son is going through.
I miss normality.
