You mentioned non- football staff in your first sentence but saying staff in the second sentence, you mean not players?
Or players included?

Correct, at this point, not players.

GWS and Gold Coast have stood down most of their non-football staff already.

Football staff at all clubs currently being thinned out, most will lose their incomes.

Surely players being put on reduced wages happens first?
Getting rid of staff on $50-150k first seems wrong given top end players will still see half of their $600-800k.
What are the staff getting paid to do whilst football is off?
Many staff at a football club wouldn’t be required if there is no football I’d think

Players aren’t required either if there’s no football. ;)
I just hate how industries always start at the bottom when trying to save money.

Players should all be put on minimum wage until further notice IMO[/quote]Difference is that players would be on a contract whereas club staff would be casual employees. People that man membership tents and merchandise stalls at games for instance would have been the first to go.
The AFLPA is in loggerheads with the AFL currently because the players aren’t being paid but are expected to retain their fitness and are still subject to random drug tests etc in this period. Players are arguing that they are effectively out of work so should be free to go and do whatever they want

Players have the AFLPA in their corner with contracts backed by laywers, the football department and non football people are sitting ducks in comparison.

Of course and not saying it’s right but office staff and other non essential staff are always going to be sent packing first. Collingwood have laid off their entire football department staff

In all seriousness that would have to be the strength and conditioning coaches, nutritionists and physiology staff members you would think.

The AFL has said "We can't give you what we don't have" and will be looking at a 75% pay cut for players.

Yep. 50% until 31 May and then it goes to 78%. that's a massive pay cut no matter what wage you're on.

Top end players will still receive 6 figures even after the 78% reduction.
For doing nothing as well.

The poor average Joe in the real world who loses their job gets nothing.

Would have thought the top end players, would be able to "survive" for 6 months or so on a workstart type allowance. Maybe old mate Dangerclanger as head of the players assoc can show some leadership here?

Maybe the top end can donate some to their poorer team mates?

That's what we did with the mass sackings in the Waterfront dispute. I was only casual at the time so contributed only a small amount but the higher paid permanents put in more.

Yeah and it worked.
The AFL players need to do similar if they want to survive with how it currently stands.

Based on the player average wage of $371k and a cut of 78%, they still earn $81k pa. And if they have mortgages etc they will be able to get 6 months relief from repayments, they will be OK.

David King had a good suggesting, that the % of cuts gets increased for every $100k extra you earn over the 1st $100k, so the better paid players take more of a hit, makes sense to me but these guys have lived privileged lifestyles for ever.
