Both AFL sides missing finals regularly since then.
Wasn’t that initially suppose to be their biggest gain?

I’d like to see the Port Magpies revert back to a standalone team once again.

The Power can disperse their players elsewhere.

Pretty sure it was more about control and development of players. Keeping them together was the logical step.

At the expense of winning premierships?
Got it now.

They’ve both gone backwards........

No club sets out to win B grade premierships.

That is my understanding.
I’m actually staggered it’s lasted so long, really a waste of clubs resources.
Much better to just play the U18’s with say 6 overage spots for the quality footballers coming back from injury or on the fringe. The rest go back to their community club.
I know there have been the odd exception but by in large anyone who has played over 50 Reserves games is not going to make it in the SANFL

Think once the womens footy commenced it was always the beginning of the end for the Magoos

Unfortunately I think what you both say is valid.
Definitely anyone who has been there 3-4 years in the two's and are 21-23 are unlikely to make it. Unfortunately the days of there being a bit of prestige being involved in an Sanfl club, and so you might get a few stalwarts in the 2's are gone.
It really will take away the essence of what we've come to feel makes up a whole club, top-to-bottom, rather than just a team.

With no reserves, If an injured player is forced to come back via his local club he may choose to stay there $$$$$

Who the heck covets them?

Magpies crowds have halved since they became the reserves, while at the same time they've made three grand finals, in contrast to their missing the finals most of the time between 2000-2013.

I don't doubt your devotion Booney but you're in a very small group.

Anyway I seem to recall the SANFL had to talk them into keeping the Magpies when the Power franchise was set up. It's pretty clear the Power would be happy for an excuse to get rid of them. (Although I think our celebrations are premature, as much as I'd like it to be true.)

Also the quote of yours I highlighted is a straw man argument. The vast majority of us want to see the reserves gone. Apart from UKF, delight in potentially seeing the Magpies go is only because it'll mean no reserves (assuming the Ravens get the arse). And I think you know that.

Our hatred for the reserves infiltration runs many orders of magnitude deeper than our dislike of Port and I for one would have no problem with a standalone Magpies returning à la 1997-2013.

^ this. I don't want the Magpies dead per se. I want AFL reserves out of the league, and I will be overjoyed when they are gone.

$$$ will be tight everywhere but local clubs will find the money required to entice good players back.

Which I still maintain was weak at the time by the SANFL.
No problem with Port going to a bigger and better league but that should have been the end of them in the SANFL there and then. Terrible decision to keep Port in the SANFL by all involved

It's certainly what the PAFC thought was happening.[/quote]
Bucky Cunningham is on record in the press as wanting the Magpies to continue in some form. I cannot be arsed digging up the article; search the newstext archives if you like.

Think you'll find it will be like the AFL model

Players can and will be selected to the highest competition. Like the AFL used to dictate that selection to the state league the same will occur with SANFL to the Community Footy (SAAFL, GSFL B&LFL)

If a player is on a nominated SANFL list and he is selected by that club he will have to play at that higher level. At finals time that may and will be the detriment to the community footy club. If this happens (reserves scrapped) there will be rules and regulations put in by the SANFL as the governing body of footy in this state that makes this happen. Community clubs will have to be judicious in who they recruit and pay because if theya re on a SANFL list the SANFL club will get priority. There will also be provisions put in place to all for SANFL clubs to add to their lists mid season if needs be (injury).

Me personally I hope the SANFL reserves don't get scrapped. The are an integral part of the footy club in terms of the developing league footballers and the social fabric of the club.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

If the reserves go they may as well open the gates up and allow free entry.
It’s worked for the AFLW albeit it was a new Comp but maybe it can work for the sanfl.
Crowds may come back and watch local footy.

I think it’s worth a try given the environment we are all now in.

Not sure that many pay these days.
It’d be less than half that I reckon.
So many free tickets to the sanfl through junior footy and mini league.

Profits on Food and alcohol would increase though.
Whether it would cover the loss on entry is another thing?

It’d promote the league though which it desperately needs.

Can cheapen the brand though. I say reduce to an even $10 entry.

If you cheapen the gate price you also have to cheapen Memberships. This will mean even less money for clubs.

True.
But you could/can have different levels of memberships still.

Maybe the clubs themselves could trial it as opposed to it being a league directive.

Clubs like West and South have nothing to lose as their attendances are terrible.
Port and Crows are the same.

It may attract another 500 people who wouldn’t normally attend but who are willingly to put money over the bar/canteen.
The league has to attract kids/families back to the sanfl before it’s too late.

IF the season does start this year I think free entry would be a good start.

I've been saying this for years.

From memory, you only need to attend half the games with your membership for it to be worthwhile so I can't see that $10 entry would be a problem.
