1964 - 1990

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

We should have a separate thread For Grenville Dietrich !
At a pizza bar, Grenville ordered a pizza and wanted it delivered to his house
When the delivery driver went to his car, Grenville appeared and asked the driver for a lift home !

Grenville is a fantastic bloke , in fact a SANFL legend
The last time I talked to him was at his unit
You may not believe this
Grenville was watching an AFL game that involved his former club RI and was drinking a beer ....

I never made it to the Panthers Disco
What years was the disco open ?

I remember Brenton Roberts, blonde haired singer , did the live venues around Adelaide night clubs

The disco was open from at least the late 70's through to when we left in 94.

Grenville.

I used to see him at the Rosewater Sports and Social ( a backstreets old fashioned club that I think no longer exists) on a Friday about lunch time. A great bloke to have a beer with and a good yarn. Just about any bloke that came through the door would love to say hello to him.

NW 5-3...10-6...13-9..13-10

Im one of those people who records the goalscorers in the budget
By the time the game finished he had kicked 10+ goals

Some footage of the 1964 Grand Final has surfaced and posted by the SANFL. Not seen by anyone I know.

I wonder where it has been?

Thanks Doc wonderful viewing
SA first score was a point kicked by Roennfeldt [17]
Left foot shot from the forward pocket on a very tight angle
Unless Im mistaken Roennfeldt used a checkside kick ?

Its great too see footage of David Soapy Kantilla

Great footage, excellent quality.

Interestingly, I reckon I saw a banner along the eastern boundary fence that referred to 'the blues.' Didn't know South went by that nickname.

Good point, although IMO it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation. These clubs were the wealthiest (as I understand it, money really became a big thing into the 1970s) and their ability to attract better players led to more on-field success, and thus bigger crowds.

Maybe Sturt played in the reserves GF beforehand?

An excellent theory, although I looked up the records and North beat Norwood in the curtain raiser that day.

But that puzzled me as well.

The few times that North were playing well during that time they drew sizeable crowds, and certainly their supporters travelled more than at least one of the so called big 4 supporters. For whatever reason, probably as I have explained before, between 1970 and 1983 North had only half the population to choose from as the other clubs (I will never understand how Pooraka belonged to Port, Kilburn to Woodville and Valley View to Torrens), North didn't have the money.

The Thirds (Under 19s) certainly played that day as well. They started around 9:00 a.m., the Reserves (or Second 18s as they were then known) at about 11:30 a.m. and the League at 2:20 p.m. Did Sturt play in the Thirds because that is certainly a Sturt banner.
Alternatively did someone forget to take in down from after the Preliminary Final?

Booney
Circa 1970
No colour TV , so to impress you TVs were 'black and white'!
Good try , but I didnt get the trifecta , there were no TAB trifectas in the 1970 , but I did take quinellas back then
The most pleasing thing about rd 1 in 1970 was that my mob beat your mob by 26 points

And a useful player named Carman was a last minute inclusion for Norwood. I believe that he was best on ground.

I thought that the most pleasing thing of all was that my mob were on top after Round 1 with the Roosters triumphing by 105 points over West Torrens

Peter Marker saw Barrie Robrans debut game in 1967
I saw Phil Carmans fabulous debut for NW in 1970
I quickly noticed a NW player playing a superb game , it was number 9
I looked in my budget there was no number 9 listed, so he was a late inclusion
I was sitting in the members grandstand , wing area
I asked a couple of others who number 9 was, no one knew ....number 9 number 9 number 9 ....
I had watched this mystery player who had a splendid game , and also watched NW beat PA by a comfortable 26 points
I found out after the match concluded that it was Phil Carman
A special mention to Bill Hager for making it possible for Phil Carman to play at Norwood

I would say between 1970 + 2020 of all the NW players Ive seen , playing at a perceived 'peak' , Phil Carman was the best
Gary McIntosh is consistently the best player Ive seen at the club

I didnt go to see NW play in rd12
But I do remember listening to the scores on the radio , as I regularly on any saturday I didnt get to the football
In 1970 there were stations that had around the ground scores and regular score updates
Just looking at that scoreboard it refreshes my memory
These were the scores in the other games on the scoreboard at that exact time
A 2-12 B 5-3 [ST V WA]
C 6-5 D 10-8[WV V GL]
E 10-4 F 6-1 [PA V NW]
G 2-1 H 2-9 [WT V NA]

I have a great memory ...... !

The final scores ended up
ST 4-19 WA 5-7
WV 14-12 GL 21-16
PA 16-11 NW 14-3[PA win by 20 points NW still up in the Booney/Mal Cup by % in 1970, NW unlucky PA kicked so straight]
WT 5-5 NA 13-14
CD 14-12 SA 5-10

The ladder after this round was
ST 12-0
PA 10-2
NA 7-5
GL 7-5
NW 6-6 The BIG5 filling the top 5 spots ....
WT 5-7
WA 5-7
WV 5-7
CD 2-10
SA 1-11

As for the Booney/Mal PA V NW Cup in 1970
It came down to the last round
Both sides 1 win each
NW a 6 point better % irrelevant , as both sides had a win each
In essence whoever won the game won the Booney/Mal cup

The game was played at Alberton , a losing drive past the caDaver Cheltenham cemetery for most SANFL games at Alberton
I didnt get to this game , but do remember what happened
All Norwood had to do was win the game to finish 4th on the ladder, and more imPORTantly win the Booney/Mal cup !
PA 3-2....4-5...6-7
NW 3-0...6-0...7-5
Either side can win this match at 3/4 time
PA scored 3-4 in the last qtr
NW scored 3-0 in the last qtr[ in doing do scored 9 goals straight in the 1st/2nd+ last qtrs]

Can you believe it this game ends in a draw
PA 9-11
NW 10-5

GL 11-9 ........... 22 points 50.83 %
NW 10-8-2........22 points 50-00 %[ 2 draws, the other against WA]

So GL ,who beat WT by 9 points finish 4th
Norwood finish 5th
BUT
NW won the Booney/Mal Cup in 1970 ....

I lived in Para Vista and went to Para Vista High School. Played in the same school team as Bruce Lindsay & Trevor Clisby.

Bruce played for West Torrens & Trevor for North Adelaide. Within a 5-10 minute drive of our house in four different directions were the boundaries for
North Adelaide, West Torrens, Port Adelaide & Central District. Every couple of years I was zoned to a different club and wanted to play for none of them.
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.
