I can’t believe there hasn’t been more contention re Lenny Hayes getting inducted the night before.
He might’ve been a “really good bloke” & a “great teammate” but his inclusion only reaffirms by belief the HOF should be every 2-3 years. His selection is right up there with Dean Kemp & Simon Goodwin.

I agree. By the time you and I leave this mortal coil there will be 200+ HoF inductees and it feels like we're adding players in just for the sake of adding players in.

Been some interesting ones of late. Bickley & Anthony Stevens can both count themselves fortunate to be in also .
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Lots of players could be considered "tough" in a multitude of ways.

Anyone tougher than Jason McCartney play the game at AFL level? What about Jarryd Roughead beating cancer to play again? For mine they might be the two toughest players to ever play the game but they're not what you'd consider tough guys on the field.

Is someone like Campbell Brown tougher than Michael Wilson? Brown was rough and tough, Wilson played a finals series and premiership with two shoulders popping out almost weekly.

Is Bryon Pickett tougher than Paul Kelly? Pickett laid the biggest nastiest bumps in the modern game but is that tougher than Kelly who never shirked a contest.

I think it might be a bit of a time thing. With Black & Brown being in only 5-6 years since they retired we don't have time to appreciate them. For example last year Trevor Barker got inducted & over the years his stature has grown in the game and no one was overly bothered from memory that he got in. However if you compared Barker to Black & Brown the latter two are 2x the player he was without a doubt.

They may just need to push the waiting criteria out to 8-10 years & have special cases for 5 years when for someone like Gaz jnr when retires perhaps?

Joel Selwood surely the most courageous.

He is in the conversation, but more so than McCartney? I don't think there's a more courageous story, one that required more physical and mental toughness than what McCartney went through.

I just have my geelong coloured glasses on. I know Selwood cops some flack for being a ducker etc, but he doesn't shirk an issue. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have been more courageous though so no issues with McCartney getting the accolades.

Fair enough, you admire the blokes you watch the most of. For mine there's few I've seen tougher than Michael Wilson, at SANFL and AFL level he never missed when it was "his turn to go" and his 2004 finals series is one that should be heralded. He had both shoulders reconstructed after the GF win, he had them both pop out several times during the finals, he was literally held together with tape for that month.

Like him or not, you can't question Selwood's guts or lack of fear of getting hurt.

I guess there's many levels of the words "courageous", I'm not sure that there's been many, if any games or times of AFL where I've actually had tears rolling down my face like I did after the speech that Jason McCartney delivered that night, I had always liked him as a player although I don't think we ever saw the best of what he could do consistently.

McCartney definitely falls into the category, as does Paul Kelly, Pickett on the other hand, not for mine.

I loved Pickett and he was a hard as a cats head who could come from nowhere, but I don't think bumping someone into next Tuesday who is completely unaware has the same level of courage to it as some other players mentioned.

Wilson would've been the first name on the whiteboard after getting through Thursday night training, he left nothing behind.
