Protesters must self-isolate, says AMA chief

Liz Main
The head of the peak body representing Australian doctors says any person who attended Black Lives Matter rallies over the weekend should self-quarantine for two weeks.

“No matter how much hand sanitiser, no matter much the masks were being worn, for those periods of time there is a risk of the virus passing," Dr Tony Bartone, President of the Australian Medical Association, told 3AW this morning.

“If everyone was wanting to keep the rest of the community safe, anyone who attended those rallies really should stay home and keep away from the rest of the community for at least two weeks.

“More importantly, if they develop any symptoms they need to get tested immediately.”

Dr Bartone said people should also keep in mind they may have the virus but be asymptomatic.

Haha
Good Luck with any of those brain dead protesters giving a flying f**K about the health and safety of the community by self isolating for 2 weeks.
If they did care they wouldn't have gone in the 1st place.

If any one in the community ends up getting the virus and dies because of these reckless actions, the organizers of the rallies should be charged with manslaughter !!!!!

There is no gain in scare-mongering for either of those medical people.

They are not politicians trying to win elections or get groups on side, and Tony Bartone is not paid by anyone to head the AMA. He is a practising doctor whose own income is likely to have been reduced by those people with general medical issues putting of going to their GPs and specialists to avoid the risk of catching CV at the surgery. ( I also know about "not paid" from times when I was treasurer of a medical specialist college and later its rep on the AMA-SA council and from recent phone discussion with Chris Moy who heads the AMA-SA branch currently.)

Medical newsletters and journals are full of concern about increased seriousneess of heart problems and diabetes issues because people are putting off their routine check ups.

We are not yet guaranteed safe as there may well be undiagnosed sufferers out there who can spread it as soon as we start getting over-excited and careless about spread. Caution makes sense.

Ardern's hard & fast lockdown paying off now.

New Zealand drops Covid-19 restrictions after nation declared 'virus-free'

New Zealand’s government will lift all Covid-19 restrictions except stringent border controls almost immediately, prime minister Jacinda Ardern has said, as the nation’s health officials declared that there were no longer any known, active cases of the coronavirus remaining.

“We are ready,” said Ardern at a news conference in Wellington, adding that New Zealanders had “united in unprecedented ways to crush the virus.”

Ardern has drawn global headlines and praise from the World Health Organization for her government’s approach to the virus, with a strict and cautious approach that appears to have paid off. On 25 March she locked down the country for four weeks – requiring that most New Zealanders remained at home most of the time – before gradually easing restrictions.

Well the BLM protest organisers are seeking further exemptions so they can hold protests every weekend. If that gets the go ahead it’s hard to see why anyone else should follow SAPOL directives and it either becomes a free for all or restrictions get lifted. As it is anyone who copped fines on the weekend should be seeking legal advice IMO

Yep, went against everything they’ve been enforcing. We’ve been let down majorly by the Premier, Police Minister & SA Health.
Absolute slap in the face to us all. Couldn’t visit an ageing loved one in a retirement home, couldn’t gather to show our respect for our Diggers, only ten people can attend funerals, force businesses to close turning people’s lives upside down & putting thousands to the wall.
But you lot on Saturday can go your hardest & ignore what the rest of the community adhere to.

Do you think the protest would have been given the all clear if we'd had 40 cases in SA and 15 unidentified cases of community transmission? Of course not, they factored in the health aspect ( which at this point appears to be very low given our numbers ) and the chance of stopping the protest ( other than using force ) which isn't us, If the first posed a major risk then they'd have had to use the second.

I had no real problems with the protest going ahead, but maintaining any restrictions from here on in seems impossible.

As for footy crowds, let ammo's and SANFL have crowds, they get less than the protest and can distance far more easily, I'm not sure we're at letting AO get filled just yet though.

I'm thankful for the protest, it will probably be the precursor to get crowds back at the footy sooner rather than later.

Spot on. Reckon the Governments would have seen them as a crash test dummy scenario, and a catalyst for re-opening via putting the responsibility back on the citizens

A precedent has been set. I insist that the next BLM protest be held on the hill of Adelaide Oval during a SANFL game. Solidarity, brothers!

Yeah i couldn't give a fat rats clacker if they want to protest. What pisses me off, is all of the restrictions for everyone else. Absolute joke, especially for something that is not even an issue in Australia in the grand scheme of things.

A second Black Lives Matter protest would not receive a gathering exemption if it applied for one this weekend. The Police Commissioner says he bowed to public sentiment over global events, but does not want to make a mockery of restrictions.
