The AFL brought in the interchange cap to open the game up as players become fatigued late in quarters, shortening the quarters has the exact opposite effect. If they want 16 minute quarters limit interchanges accordingly or reduce the bench to 3.

How often do sides kick 2 or 3 goals in "junk time" to break a game open? They're screwed now though, they can't change back to 20+ time on in the middle of the year.
Interesting that the NRL chose to stay with the full 40 minutes per half and the game has never looked quicker. Players are gassed and there is a lot more room for players to make runs which leads to more tries and a better spectacle.
I really don’t think the AFL needed to shorten the quarters

If they were anticipating 3 games in a week and they needed shorter games then all well and good, now we're back into it and looks like we'll get a 17 week season why not revert back? Do it at the end of this 5 week fixture if they have to.

No, not at all, Boomers are a real thing, you can be called one, if you are one. If you are champed it's not because you are a champion.

Only 10 goals in perfect conditions.
What a disappointing spectacle, hardly worth the wait.
I kept looking for something else to do!
The game is not the same.
P.s.
Please lengthen the quarters.

What a shag show. Sounds like Primary school stuff. Do the players crossing teams only go to WCE for a quarter each so everyone gets a go? Do the best players go to WCE in the first quarter to allow them to catch up at the end? FFS.

I reckon Collingwood and Richmond have played in round 2 several times in recent years and they’ve nearly always been low scoring contests. Last night was effectively round 1 with even less quality preparation, shorter quarters etc. A lot of it comes down to the style of footy each side plays aswell. Far too small a sample size to be hanging the game/comp yet.

I havent followed it too closely but wasnt the shortened quarters introduced to 'protect' players from injuries rather the quality of spectacle. Essentially they dont want tired footballers out there.

I dont agree with it but wasnt that the logic.

Maybe the AFL is worried about the season being cut short because of the second wave.

It was initially brought in as they thought they may be playing more than one game per week.

It's a bit like that, seems more like exhibition games than a season, I guess time will tell.

Collingwood parking the bus after quarter time didn't help. They aren't an exciting team to watch, a lot of short chip kicks.
