1921 - 1963

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

KEN FARMER

1940
RD6
WT 18-19
NA 11-11

RD 12
NA 26-11
WT 8-14

Thats the game Ken Farmer kicked 23 goals out of a team total of 26 goals
If anyone finds a time machine or a way to transport me back to that game, please inform me
He did this in a team that finished 6th with only 6 wins for the season
The scores were interesting with a form reversal by NA in the 2nd match between the 2 clubs

BRUCE SCHULTZ

1941
RD12
NW 29-7
GL 17-13

This was the second last game of Bruce Schultz's career
In this game he scored a phenoMenAL 19 -2
The 2 points he scored hit the post !
At 28 years old, he was probably at his or close to his peak as a footballer
Schultz ended up with 669 goals
Had he not been injured, plus the intervention of a global conflict , he may have had 4-6 years left to play
Had he maintained his form he would have been an almost monty to score 1,000+ SANFL goals

1938 Grand Final.

Port v South
With the scores locked together at Half time, it was thought the second half would see a tight arm wrestle between 2 very determined teams. This wasnt to be the case. To the surprise of almost all of the 33,000 in attendance the 3rd quarter saw "the City team" (South Adelaide) score a mind boggling 12 goals 4 behinds to Ports 2.3, - certainly no flooding in those days!!
- so for all intents and purposes the game and the Premiership belonged to South at 3/4 time.
The final scores being..
South 23.14
Port 15.16.
Best player on the ground was Laurie Cahill the South and State wingman who later went on to coach South and West he also won a Bay Sheffield.(since then 2 other South players have won the prestigious footrace- Alf Skuse and Darren Kappler). Laurie Cahills' brother Vin. also played a few games for South .Vins' son John also played football at Junior level for South, winning the McCallum Medal, before joining Port Adelaide.
Others to play well for South were Laurie Rusby-5 goals, Max Murdy, Don Pryor, Jack Cockburn (1935 Magarey Medallist) and the Dawes brothers.
Ports best were Hollingworth, Bob Quinn, Hender & Reval.
The late 30's were a successful period for South, a club that has continually struggled in the SANFL since its glory days of the 1890s.
1934.-8th
1935 -Premiers
1936 -4th
1937 -2nd
1938 -Premiers
1939 -3rd
1940 -2nd
1941 -5th.

From the Premiership elation of 1938 it would be a 26 year long wait for more Premiership glory in 1964.

Excellent review of the 1938 GF by the South Adelaide correspondent
In order to keep BW posting, we need a dedicated 1800s thread ....
That 12 goal quarter, wow, in a grand final

SA might have been an enterprising side to watch
For 3 seasons in a row they scored the most total points in the Minor Round

1938
SA 15-2...2244
NW 13-4 1871

1939
SA 12-5 2135
PA 13-4 1939

1940
SA 12-5 2104
ST 13-4 2013

Ive listed the second highest scoring teams in the 3 year span
This shows how much more SA scored compared to next best

The other offcut is that PA scored 1939 Minor Round points in the year of 1939

My "uncle" played 70 games with Ken and he told me a couple of stories about Ken's ability. He wasn't so much a high flyer, but more a very, very strong mark. At training he would hold the ball in one hand and dare players to punch the ball from his hand.

Just on that if anyone has the chance to read the Farmer Files do it, one of the best historic reads I've ever read as it really took you back to the time he was playing.

CHRIS DIDDY MUNRO
1928-1930 WA
1932-1936 SA
He only played 78 games in 8 seasons , but he had left a lasting impression
He scored 393 goals at an average of 5.04 per game in his brief but brilliantly performed career
He started off playing for WA where he scored 13 goals in 9 games
He excelled at SA where he added 380 goals in 69 matches
Diddy made the SA team of the century at full forward

Diddy averaged a sensational 5-5 goals per game for SA
Im wondering why he only played 78 games out of a possible 136 Minor round games + finals

1935 SA Premiership
1964 SA premiership , there was an omen for this premiership
In mid 1964 Manfred Mann recorded a smash hit
That hit was called do wah DIDDY DIDDY ...

13 Unlucky for sum

1935...2-3...8-4...10-8...13-13
1984.. 1-2...8-7...11-11.13-13

These are the quarter by quarter scores by PA , 49 years apart
13-13 just happens to be PAs Grand Final scores in those seasons

1935 G/F
SA 15-9
PA 13-13

1984 G/F
NW 15-10
PA 13-13

Almost identical scorelines
Both winning team forwards Souths Chris Diddy Munro and Norwoods Neville Rocky Roberts kicked 6 goals

I learnt two things from your post, Mal. I have known for the best part of 60 years that his initials were C.C. Munro, but I didn't know that his first name was Chris. Everyone always referred to him as Diddy. I worked for a short time with his granddaughter and even she referred to him as "Diddy"
And secondly I didn't know he played for West Adelaide.
Part of the reason he only played 13 games at West Adelaide in 3 years was because West had a gun full forward, "Dickie" Bennetts, who averaged 4.23 goals per game in over 100 games. Unfortunately "Dickie" Bennetts fell foul of the tribunal at the end of 1929 and was suspended for 3 years!!! I don't know why Diddy didn't grab his chance with West in 1930, nor where he played in 1931.
Diddy did average nearly 14 games a season with South.
I wonder whether Diddy went to South because West and South's recruiting zones were very close. In those days West's main catchment area was half of the City of Adelaide. The half west of King William Street, which certainly made sense to me. South's main area was the city area east of King William Street, which suggests they should have been called East Adelaide.
As early as 1907 it was suggested that they merge to form an Adelaide Football Club, the main reason was their lack of support. It is interesting to note that 113 years on, and both with homes outside of the city they still generally have a lack of support. It is understandable with South who apart from fleeting success in the 1930s and 1964 have had a hard time for virtually all of the 20th century, but West certainly have had their moments with good sides

A diddy is also a female breast or nipple.

Not sure how Christopher Cameron Munro got this name, but must have been good as it is recorded against all his records.

Based on some very brief SA vs Vic footage that surfaced last year, I thought he might have been a similar type of player to Allen Jakovich.

KEN FARMER
A person told me this about Ken Farmer today
He was a carer for a mature aged man a while ago , and asked me to post this on his behalf
The man, by then a dementia sufferer , would ask him on many occasions
" How many goals did Ken Farmer kick today, did he kick any over his head ?"

The footage was actually released a few years back, if people haven't seen it.
SA vs Victoria at the 1933 carnival in Sydney.
Farmer kicked 6 and the Victorian equivalent Coventry kicked 7. Another legend Haydn Bunton Snr is also in the match.

I was in the same class at school as Diddy Munros' grandson. Often Diddy would take us young lads to the South games at Adelaide Oval. He was just great fun to listen to, was very modest and in my opinion an excellent judge (brutal) of a players ability. I believe his nickname came from his initials CC .. and there DD..

1948
This is where a few of the SANFL clubs went or intended to go for their end of season trips

NW and PA played a match at Renmark
NA went to Tasmania
SA went to Melbourne
GL went to Mildura
WA went to Port Lincoln by steamer !

No records if ST + WT went on an end of season trip

But would they know who they would have been tied to if Woodville hadn't come into the competition. ZipZap would have been 8 when the boundaries changed to include Woodville and Dettman would not have been born. I was told that Ralph Sewer came from the Wingfield area which had always been Port area up to 1959.
I don't know where Dettman came from.
I am sure that is what the great Mal wants to know. To which club they would have been tied.

Ralphy said he would definately have been tied to Port, haven't caught up with Detto yet.

NA ...4-5...7-6...11-11...12-13 [85]
WA ..1-0...7-6.....8-8.......8-12[60]

This game was played at Prospect Oval
It was a remarkable match in the history of the SANFL
Take a deep breath
Hold your chair tight
Ken Farmer did not score a goal in this match
It is the only time in Ken Farmers career he has not scored a goal

The reason why Ken Farmer didnt score a major is because he was injured in the first quarter and had to be replaced

Ken Farmer
1417 or 1419 SANFL goals
RIG I know you want more
So I found sum more

In 1940 ST were the premiership team defeating SA by 21 points
There was a match played after the GF
ST played a game considered as ST v the rest of the SANFL

STURT 5-2......10-4.......16-8.....25-12
OTHER 6-10...10-16.....17-20...22-25

ST won this match by 5 points
Ken Farmer played for the OTHER team and scored 10 goals

RIG is Kens total SANFL goals
1427 or 1429 ...

Alec Williams commenced playing for ST in 1938
This no doubt influenced his brother Fos Williams to try out for ST
Fos Williams at least once played in a ST trial
That trial didnt end up the making of a possible ST career
Fos did return to Unley on Australia Day 1956 , to get married though at a church I was later a groomsman at
Fos signed up to be a GL player at one stage

Once again the dynamics of the SANFL could have been significantly altered had Fos been a ST or GL player
Had Fos never ended up at PA via WA , perhaps there may never have been a Port Power these days

1945 was certainly a year to remember

RD1
28/4/1945
PA 0-4...2-8...9-13...19-15 [129]
WT 2-2..4-5....6-7.......7-9 [51]

BIG turnaround in the 2nd half
One could be excused for thinking PA players might have been running around like unregistered dogs

8/5/1945
A day of reckoning
Germany surrendered , the war in Europe had finished
On the same day it was reported that PA did not win this match
PA played Colin Grimm an unregistered player
PA were stripped of the 2 points

6/8/1945
Hiroshima was smashed by the detonation of the Atom bomb , which was a major turning point in the ending of WW2
WT were in 5th place with a 6-7 record after 13 rounds
Round 14 started 11/8/45
WT won the next 4 minor round matches
It was still mathematically possible for WT to miss the top 4 had NA + ST won and WT lost in the last round

FINALS

1ST SEMI
WT 14-22
NA 15-10
Torrens led by 40 points at 1/4 time, and won a very controversial final , alarm bells followed
73 years later these clubs were involved in another very controversial final

PRELIM
NW 14-9
WT 14-13
Torrens led by 34 points at 1/4 time , once again winning narrowly

G/F
PA..8-3...9-7....13-11....15-12
WT..2-7..9-11...13-17.. 15-25
Port led by 32 points at 1/4 time , Torrens won another close final

WT did not lose a game after the bombing of Hiroshima, winning 7 consecutive matches

Colin Grimm listed as playing full forward in the G/F scored 3 goals
Colin Grimm only played 16 games for PA all in 1945
His first and last games were against WT , 2 games he most likely would never have forgotten

Not a good 1945 for SA
Wooden Spooners
3 days before the SANFL finals SA footballer and Australian Test cricketer Clem Hill passed away

The WT annual report of 1945 on the G/F win :
: The young WT side came back with a burst of atomic energy and wiped off a BIG deficit

WT win a premiership in Belligerent times
