Any idea why James Craig isn't playing today? Did we play a smaller side expecting a wet, wintry day? Did he play reserves? Or is he injured?

Good question. If history is any indicator, it’s the latter.

First time I’ve tuned into the digital pass. People are right, the commentary is terrible.

Pretty entertaining game. Like the way we’ve gone about it, happy to be 19 points in format at lemon time. ;) Bays not out of it yet, though.

North five goals better than us today, scoreline flattered us. Looks like we are stuck in the mud and played with heavy legs most of the game. Work rate without the football poor.

Always great to knock off the Bays on their home deck, especially when they're a strong side.

Glad to see we weathered the Bay comeback in the last with Finlay on crutches, and the absence of Craig and Hartung, as well as the ongoing injuries to Alex Barns. Mitch Harvey did a great job rucking for the majority of the day. Our solid tackling and pressure was a key factor in the win.

Was just going to post, does anyone know if we have a radio option for this game? Why do they have the commentators so loud, they're terrible anyway but surely they can turn it down by half and let us hear the crowd a bit more. If anyone knows anyone in charge of the digital pass here, get the word out. It's not just this game it's every one, way too loud compared to the ground noise.

Its not the volume its just the commentators .They are poo. He has absolutely no idea. Kept saying about no one knows how much time has gone? WTF Does he realise we see it on the screen? Tells us something he is going to say and doesn't say it? 21 mins into a quarter says it is deep into the last quarter . The list goes on . The worst was when he spoke of Bradley and after repeating his names in that terrible voice referred to him as Braddles and tried a segway into Mark Naley. "Speaking of Braddles sad to hear the passing of Mark Naley". Oh get off mate its embarrassing. Cant the SANFL attract some commentators for the Pass ? Maney by far the best.

Absolutely, they proved today they're the best team of the last couple of years and Glenelg got very lucky last year only beating a reserves side in the GF. Just a shame they didn't unfurl the flag today like everyone other club does, I think they were scared and rightly so. ;)
I still think Norwood with a bit more heart and a bit less guts would be the team to beat.

20 mins
3rd qtr
score
GL 7-4
NA 8-11

A NA player snaps and the ball goes through the goals
The goal umpire calls it touched and signals a point
The field umpire consults and over rules the goal umpire

Ive been going to the football almost as long as Psyber
Its the first time I can recall seeing this happening in the SANFL
The commentators also said they were unsure if the field umpire could reverse a such decision

As I understand things there is a rule that allows a field umpire to reverse a goal umpires decision if the ball is clearly not touched
Therefore I conclude the right decision was made , or at the very least common sense has prevailed

Can anyone confirm my thoughts, that a field ump can over ride the goal ump in these instances ?

I doubt it's changed since I last read the rule - the goal umpire is the final judge of a score/non-score. It's possible the field umpire had input to change the goal umpires mind, but the goal umpire has the final say.

He can not over rule. Perhaps he was able to advise the umpire of what he saw and the goal umpire took this on board.

15.1.5 Goal Umpire to Judge Goal or Behind
(a) The goal Umpire shall decide whether a Goal or Behind has been scored
but may, before deciding, consult with the field or boundary Umpires or
the official scorer. The decision of the goal Umpire shall be final. The goal
Umpire shall only signal that a Goal or Behind has been scored when the
field Umpire signals ‘All Clear’ or ‘Touched All Clear’, as the case may be.

In 60 years of going to the footy I don't think that I have ever seen the field umpire tell the goal umpire that the ball wasn't touched but someone who should know told me immediately after the game that the field umpire did the correct thing.
I was surprised, but I guess common sense prevailed, it clearly wasn't touched.

My understand is as follows.

The goal umpire has "authority" to call a touched within the goalsquare. If however the goal umpire believes a ball was touched in play outside the goal square he/she is to consult with the field umpire. This is when you see the goal umpire enter the field of play to discuss with the fieldy. If the ball is touched outside the goal square, and in general play, the call is made by the field ump. The field umpire will indicate to the goal umpire by either raising 2 hands (goal) or one hand (behind) to communicate what he/she believes the score is. The ultimate score decision is that of the goal umpire in general play.

I have 2 experiences with this in my umpiring tenure.

1. Goal Umpiring a HFL Div 1 A grade game. Final Quarter home team kicks it through the goals, field ump signals to me touched in general play. I raise my hands to signal the touch, and wave off a point. Supporters at the bar behind me giving me heaps. One of them (A guy I know) comes down to the fence & says, why was that a point...... touched in the field of play mate, take it up with the central ump...... he returned to the bar.

2. Field umpiring a junior game here in Melb, Parents goal umpiring. Close game kid kicks at goal, touched off hands & I call it staright away, ball sails through the goals..... Dad signals goal..... I go over & say nah mate it was touched...... Dad says I get to call the touched ones mate..... yep you do, in the goal square, this was 35 metres out..... signal a point champ!
