:-??

The GIANTS are pleased to finalise coach Leon Cameron’s contract extension for a further two seasons.

The announcement comes on Cameron’s 48th birthday ahead of the club’s crucial match against Carlton on the Gold Coast on Thursday night.

GIANTS CEO David Matthews said it was pleasing to finalise the extension for both Leon and the Club.

“We committed to extending Leon at the start of this year and having worked through changing industry dynamics, we are pleased to have completed an agreement,” Mr Matthews said.

GIANTS General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said Leon was the right man to continue to lead the team.

“Leon is an outstanding coach who has led this Club to victories in the last four finals series as well as our maiden Grand Final appearance,” Mr McCartney said.

“Leon has been central to building the strong culture of the GIANTS which has grown rapidly both on and off-field under his guidance.

“Given his success and the relationships he’s formed since arriving at the club at the end of 2012, we are delighted to extend his contract for a further two seasons.”

Cameron joined the club as senior assistant coach to inaugural coach Kevin Sheedy ahead of the 2013 season before taking the reins as head coach from 2014.

He has coached the club in 156 games over six and a half seasons following a 10-year apprenticeship as an assistant AFL coach.

The former Footscray and Richmond player led the club to an inaugural finals series in 2016. The GIANTS have not missed the finals since as the only club to win a final in each of the past four years.

I think most people agree they should have won one by now and I personally wouldn't have recontracted him but massive underachiever is off the mark I reckon.

2016 - 16/6 finish 4th, Dogs beat them in the Prelim ( This is the one they should have won )
2017 - 14/6/2 draws 4th 2 points behind Adelaide on top, win one of the draw they finish top, Richmond beat them in the Prelim
2018 - 13/8/1 finish 7th, Collingwood beat them in the semi
2019 - 13/9 lose the granny

Now I look more closely, maybe I wouldn't sack him! He's getting them deep into September every year, they just need to take the next step.

To be fair, 2014 (6/16) 2015 (11/11).

He's got a fair W/L ratio since 2015 and has developed many kids in a non football area, player retention would be difficult.

So Grand Final confirmed for the Gabba.

Whilst I have no issues with it, I do feel like other states never really had a chance - not when you have commentators every night pushing their views that QLD should host it for "saving the AFL season".

AO on standby as backup venue.
Port to get possibly 2 home finals including a Prelim whilst Perth looking likely to be snubbed and get no finals

I don’t believe it is but even if so just come out and announce it earlier. Why all the charades of making other states bid for it when it was a foregone conclusion since day 1

WA won't allow fly in fly out ( hard quarantine for 7 days ) SA will allow fly in fly out so no WA finals I think.
