Surely the drop punt is the most accurate and easiest kick to negotiate for any level of footballer, especially one that has done more than 10 million of them in their life, it cost Essendon the win IMO, three of them in the first quarter, I still would've kicked them all.

Said to mrs Locky last night, if i was still coaching anyone that did this kick around the corner rubbish when the drop punt is the better option would be put on the pine, is bloody ridiculous, is all about showing off IMO

As much as I agree with you I think it's a coaching and sport science thing, they honestly believe that you open the goals up to a greater angle by kicking it around the corner.

The part they don't get is the slightest miscue in angle, ball drop or execution point and then the kick is pretty much no hope, you can still wobble through a poorly executed drop punt though..................baffling, especially considering that 95% of the kicks during any given match would be drop punts.

You can thank the Irish Gaelic game for it.

They say you get consistency of ball flight, rather than kicking it on the point.
On the point, slightly miss the instep and it can hook or slice.
Kicking it on the flat and it'll only go one way....mostly.

I think there's an element off show off...look at me....but it does have merit.
Urghh, hate to say it but BT says it best.
Know your style ( Hawkins for instance).
If he's to the right of goal he fades it perfectly with a drop punt.
He's the exception to rule. When he's on the left of goal unless on tge boundary) he drops the fade and kicks it dead straight.

Can kick a footy.

Don't they play with a round ball though?

I think its dumb personally, surely by the time you reach AFL you're good enough to execute a drop punt... also think drop punts tend to go straighter than a hook around the body.

The way they kick it, not the shape.

Not many can kick it dead straight!
Actually, they are mostly drafted on athletic ability rather than skills unfortunately.

Kicking round the corner is a cop out. Its like the players feel less pressure if they go the snap. Unless your stevie-j leave it at training!

I know its been said a lot, and repeating here.. but AFL these days truly is a very poor spectacle.

If there wasn't gambling inc tips, same game multi's etc.. would there be much interest?

I cant handle watching these low scoring affairs anymore - give me the 90's where the style was score over 100pts and win the game.

Kudos to the goal umpire there... excellent call, ball not fully over the line before touched.
