At the end of the day everyone tends to focus on the draft which is a bit of a lucky dip, there are always diamonds in the rough and even if you do land an early placed ripper, chances are they'll return to their home state just as they are hitting their peak.

Hawthorn, Geelong and Richmond tend to pick up ready made players and live for the day while still bringing kids through the system, Port have modelled this to some degree, obviously without the silverware and took more in than needed but it has seemed to have had moderate success at this point, Geelong seem to do it brilliantly, like the Hawks were a few years ago, bring players in to compliment your squad immediately.

That's not the issue, the issue is a team at the top being able to poach a free agent from a team at ( or heading to ) the bottom.

The same issues arose when Lynch went from the Suns to Richmond, it's not what the AFL had in mind when free agency was introduced.

The stupid AFL for some reason didn’t listen to advice that players would choose less money to play for a good team.
North, Essendon etc offering $1m a year or Richmond, Geelong offering $500k a year I’m choosing option B every day of the week

AFL Players drove FA not the AFL.

Smart year for Geelong to do after FA's and top up, with Ablett and probably 2-3 others retiring it frees up cap space and they have 3 picks in the Top 20 of the draft. They could set themselves up real well this off season.

The same was happening to us (Leigh Colbert for eg), and I always thought we were disadvantaged trying to lure players to a shithole like Geelong. Simple trick is turn your club into a desired destination through a bit of smarts and hard work. Obviously not as simple as its sounds but possible for all clubs. The amount of shit decisions made by some of the clubs near the bottom of the ladder for years doesn't help either despite them getting better draft picks, priorities, etc.

Giants will match and ask for all 3 of those firsts. No way are they accepting a pick 9 compo for Cameron

Agree, they'll get two firsts.

Basically Tim Kelly out for Cameron in, just with 12 months between the deals.

Don't need him too much baggage we have plenty of players on the list we are developing

A Cancer we don't need.

Why do you think we got rid of Stengle

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Agreed, don't need Crouch. Would rather see guys like Collier-Dawkins, Dow, Ross etc get more exposure at the level in the midfield, and be able to remunerate them properly when they do.

Crouch to St Kilda I reckon.

Geelong have officially revolutionised the trade period. They have 2 top picks, made the GF and now have Cameron in their sights.

Other clubs battling to get a top pick need to learn from Geelong. It's not the top picks that gets you to the top, it's having good players in the 20-50 pick range that develop (and potentially get taken by other clubs) topping up their draft picks which they then use to secure other good players, not just drafting kids each year! They've never bottomed out because they don't have to.

As I've said previously no 1 draft picks don't maketh the team!
