Ventured down to Glenelg Oval , which is my favorite cricket venue these days
Having missed the entire SANFL season coz of Covid , it was nice to get to a sporting venue

I was greeted at the gate by the friendly sociable staff and security
A staff member on a computer recorded my name and address and email
Great stuff , they can contact me with newsletters, emails or whatever
Very good stuff this VIP courtesy

I settled into the grandstand
SA was just commencing their 2nd innings

A voice called out to me
" Hey XXXXXX whaddaya doin here mate."
I said "I came to see Lyold Pope bat today ...."

2/10
In strode the star batsman Travis Head
After 1 over I told my mate, he will make a ton today
The Trav didnt let me down, what a batting exhibition , solid defence laced with exquisite strokes

HILL
SOBERS
HOOKES
LEHMANN
HEAD

The lineage if classy left handers who have represented South Australia is continuing
Some of the shots The Trav played today were Brian Laraesque

What I like about The Trav is the courage to continue to play attacking shots, even if it costs him his wicket
The risk for reward , in my opinion, is worth the way The Trav continues to play
104* well played by The Trav
55* Henry Hunt who did his part

Great to be out and about today, in one of the safest cities in the southern hemisphere

As for tomorrow
Hopefully the Trav can outscore Will and Marcus in this match
And hopefully Lloyd Pope does not have to bat

Trav will have to bat for two sessions tomorrow and that probably won’t even be enough.
Any rain in the horizon down there?

Head 67*

Hunt 22*

Any chance Head can make these runs in the first innings when we need him too?

Easy to say that now, he got a pretty good delivery from Sutherland in the first innings. It was a Stuart Broad-esk delivery to Head where it was angled in with the around the wicket angle, forcing him to play, he played the line then the ball straightened off the seam and took his outside edge. Credit to Sutherland for producing that type of delivery I reckon.

Yeah sure only making 9 isn't good enough but I'm not sure what else you'd want him to do in that circumstance. He was 9 off 44 deliveries before being dismissed and had batted for 14 overs which suggests to me he was trying to get through the newish ball where it was doing a bit when the pitch had a bit in it and the Redbacks were already 2/28. If you look at the dismissals from the first innings he got the best delivery to get out too.

Most left handers have had issues with that type of delivery, even the one that doesn't straighten down the line (thinking of Broad bowling to Warner, Harris, Khawaja, Head and Wade in last years Ashes) but I'm sure he'd be working on that weakness in his game. Awesome to see him bounce back and get a century in the second innings and has pretty much cemented his spot at number 5 for Australia this summer.

Had a solid start to this season, scores of 57, 0, 30, 46, 50 and 55*. The big positive of the Redbacks batting so far.

Agree Jim. After these 2 and perhaps Nielsen it may go quickly.

Lots of talk around cricket circles on weekend re Mental Health and young players. You don't want to sound insensitive, but it seems to be a lot more common these days, whether it is used as a cop out, who knows, we all have our opinions.

Currently Redbacks have Joe Mennie and Jake Weatherald out due to mental health issues, that's two of your best five players. Jake was out at Redbacks training all week, if he wanted a break from cricket, maybe get away or something, just not sure about all that.

The players fill out daily questionnaire on how they are feeling, as soon as they say feeling bit down today, the psychologist is involved and the rest is history as they say

There may be other issues in their private lives going on as well which may contribute a lot more to their mental wellbeing than just cricket?

I want to agree.. but whose in the wings to replace him? Our batting is brittle enough without replacing another.

Bloody hell, Henry Hunt batted for 277 balls to show great spirit but to get out in that fashion is very disappointing for the lad, then Travvy, batting with his usual flair that ball is one bounce and over the square leg rope, that's the problem we have with him having very little support.

NSW were 4/162 chasing 206 to win over Queensland.
Lost 4/25 to be 8/187 still needing a further 19 runs.
Abbott and Lyon at the crease and a nervous Harry Conway in the sheds hoping he doesn't have to bat.

Lyon slaps a quick 12 off 14 balls, before being run out with scores level. Conway to the crease...
