Saints have picks next year that they could have traded or swapped. They could have done side deals to throw in a player or two or a pick swap.
Saints weren’t going to pull out of the deal it was a bluff

Wouldn’t be surprised if they have something worked out between them for Dunstan for a bag of chips or some other side deal not announced yet

Wow, just listened to Kelly on 5AA, what a joke. He is softer that butter on a summers day. Basically admitted they tried to bluff the Saints but had to fold

As Matt Rendell just said, means there was no interest in him from any other club.

Crows clearly didn’t want him back, take what you get and move on
Yeah look I can see where the crows were coming from as they clearly didn't want him back. But also this makes it clear that there is a heck of alot more going on behind the scenes with this one.

Wait and see what happens in the testing trade week.

Need to give some credit the St Kilda list management team. They've got Hannbery, Jones, Ryder, Howard, Hill, Butler and now Crouch into the club.

They go from 9 wins in 2019 to finishing 6th and winning a final in 2020. Done a great job.

Time had nothing to do with it.
Crows didnt want him even though Brad wanted to stay. Clearly more going on off field. They shopped him around and no one was interested so take 23 and move on.
I think what Will Goodings said this morning is the best way to look at it...they could have invested in his 5 year deal and then traded him in the next year or two.

You are not getting more for him in 1 or 2 years, he's 27 in January and is a RFA so clubs can get him, as St Kilda has, for nothing, next year he's a near 28 year old with a 3 or 4 year deal hanging over his head. No way do you get more for him next year. Fanciful.

Will only really be able to judge that after 5 years. Crows apparently offered him 3

No, can judge it now. Adelaide tried to bluff St Kilda and they didn't flinch because they knew the market wasn't going to take Crouch off them and they knew Adelaide didn't want him because they'd spent 3 days trying to sell him to any interested bidder.

Do you think he's worth 5 years at $650k to $800k

I think what they did was the only outcome, hence the outrage from the supporters because they played the game really poorly. They made it clear they didn't want him back and St Kilda knew that. If Adelaide tried ( in Kelly's words ) "Every avenue to get better than pick 23 for him" then St Kilda knew he wasn't going to walk back into Adelaide.

I think Crouch and his manager needs to cop some of the flack, they've handled themselves really poorly. Adelaide's previous deal ( last year) was bigger than what he's signed at St Kilda, if he wanted to stay he should have taken that deal but his manager promised riches and it never came forth. Now he's leaving a club he didn't want to leave.

Mind you, I don't think he's worth much more than a pick in the late teens/early 20's and the market says that's about right. If he was seen as a top 10 pick someone would have offered 13-20 to get him.

Crows only need one more club interested in Crouch and the whole dynamic would have changed, they were a bit unlucky in that respect. However again they have let a player leave the nest.

Saints not only get a really good player, but don't have to give anything for him, don't have to pay him above market and one of their opponents don't get a 1st round pick for compensation.
