Cheers, I dont think my workmate will be too happy to find out he gets the country edition despite living in Unley while I get the metro edition living at Happy Valley! Nothing would suprise me with the Advertiser though.

This is a good example of how journalists don't check their facts accurately enough before spilling their guts in the paper. I'd like to see an example set of this journalist and a message sent to other to lift their game. I rarely read newspapers these days because I simply cannot be sure if what I am reading is fact. My apologies to the odd exception, but I have a general dislike for journalists.

Cheers to the forumite who sent me this image of the Australian article (sorry, I didn't know who "username" was of the person who sent it to me was, Grandcentral perhaps?) - What an absolute disgrace this is, and its good to see people put their allegieances aside to be united in condemming this crap piece of journalism.

Also noticed in the retraction in the Advertiser the day after, that the word "regret" was used rather than "apologise" or "sorry".
Maybe someone with a better legal mind than myself could explain but I thought in cases like this it doesn't matter what words you use, as just by the story going to print in the first place means you are in the pooh regarding libel. "Sorry" only incriminates someone in the event of non-certain facts.

Its interesting how lately the Advertiser has been including the middle name of this Slade guy in the articles, to differentiate him from the centrals player.

Insurers won't let the media apologise, unless it is part of an agreed settlement. The reason is that an apology is an admission of guilt in these circumstances. Then, the only argument is about $$$.

By not apologising, the "victim" of defamation potebntially has to discount the claim in any settlement negotiations to cover the contingency that libel isn't proved.

In the present case, the contingency is less than 1% (IMHO), but the Insurers like to be consistent and may be (on the basis of the standard policy wording) be entitled to refuse to indemnify News Corp in any subsequent proceedings.

Finally (lecture coming to an end), potentially Wedgie may also have defamed MS, by republishing the said article on this site, but may be covered by a defence of fair comment on a matter of public interest.

Thanks Kevin, do appreciate your explanation on this one. Will clear up for those who still wonder why the "S" word will never be uttered over that other matter.
I Still say though that The Advertiser and other associated papers will be screwed in any case if Slade decides to take legal action as they have incorrectly named him in a public forum.

IMO, the whole reporting of the entire inquest has been a disgrace, and the following day's letters to the editor pretty much echoed what Punk Rooster said (I was surprised The Antagoniser gave so much space for those letters). Soon The Adveritiser going to be needed to be covered in black plastic with a big R inside a diamond on the outside of the plastic.

I hope Mediawatch do a big song and dance about it - if alerted they'll have a field day over this.

Oh yes Brucetiki / Punk, Media Watch had a bit to say about the front page you refer to I think. Disgraceful. The original photo was more tasteful than the edit. I'm ashamed to say my face was in that paper a few weeks ago, albeit on a brighter note, but alas...hmmmmorons
