Far more often than I thought then, mind you, there's been some very poor wooden spoon winners in modern times.

Just taking that very small sample size it appears to be more of a reflection of how poor the bottom side is rather than how good the top side is.

In those 4 cases it was 2/2 split as to whether they won the premiership.

Spelly could obviously offer a much larger sample size to see if it is more indicative.

When you say 'ironically', do you mean:

1. By a tragic coincidence
2. By an exceptional coincidence
3. By a curious coincidence
4. By a coincidence of no importance
5. Oddly enough

Impressive list.

Is it possible to list the best 10 Minor Round teams since 1964 using a simple order of Games Lost followed by best % ?

So the list would have 1973 Glenelg, 1978 Sturt and 2021 Glenelg at the top of the list but I don't know which of those 3 teams had the best %. Then list the teams in % order that lost only 1 game in a minor round etc..

And likewise for the 10 worst teams since 1964 using the order of games won sorted by worst % which would feature 1964 CD and 1995 Sturt as the "top" 2.

Followed by the one game winners etc...

Excellent work Spelly - this is really appreciated.

So the best performed minor round team since 1964 didn't win the premiership - as a Sturt fan that hurts !

The 1970 Port team were playing in PAFC's Centenary Year - led in the last quarter of both the 2nd Semi and Prelim Finals and lost both - minor premiers out in straight sets in the Centenary Year - that must have hurt the prison bars !

Another observation of this list is that 1978 Sturt and 1973 Glenelg had both missed the previous year's finals and so would have been given weaker sides as the 3rd time opponent hence a slightly easier draw. Which means teams that were reigning premiers like 1980 Port and the 2000s CD teams and 1968 Sturt were at the height of their powers.

The 1997-2012 fixtures alternated eg. everyone played everyone 5 times in 2 years (3 in one, 2 in the other), but here is all of those above years where each team played the other 3 times, and where those teams finished the previous year, then that year:

So, you could say that Sturt (1966 & 68), Port (1980) and Central (2007), had the toughest fixtures based on the previous year, however only Sturt (1968) had the same final placings repeat. Sturt only had one out of four 1977 finalists fixtured (West), subsequently that was the only loss Sturt had for the year against. However, West finished 9th in 1978! Indeed, Sturt appears to have had the weakest fixture based on that years final placings, playing 8, 9 and 10 three times.

Port in 1980 were reigning premiers and understandably got the triple match ups against the other 4 finalists from 1979.

But 1979 was such a weird season as traditional powerhouses Sturt and Glenelg missed the finals and erratic teams like CD, South and Woodville made the 79 finals just to revert to normal form in 1980 - so Port in 1980 actually had a easier time than what was expected.

I'm impressed with Sturt 1968 - they were reigning premiers and got the triple ups against the teams that had finished 2nd and 3rd in 1967 and were strong enough to finish 2nd and 3rd again in 1968 and yet Sturt still only lost 2 games for the season.

Furthermore Sturt beat the third placed North by 37 points, 34 points and 31 points in their three meetings in the 1968 Minor Round. That is after North had beaten them twice in the Minor Round in 1967. So it is safe to say Sturt were a 5 goal better side than the third side in 1968.
