He's not wrong. Given how little footy they've played surely they'll be better for the run. The fact they came back in the second half probably bodes well too.

Last year, North couldn't possibly have played better in the 2SF and the Eagles couldn't have played much worse. You only need a bit if a reversion to the mean two weeks later and it's a totally different story. One quarter of the Eagles playing their best and it was all over.

There's every chance Glenelg could do this year what the Eagles did last year.

i couldn't agree more about last year's Second Semi Final. The aberration wasn't the Grand Final but rather the Second Semi. In the second quarter of the Second Semi, the Eagles dominated but scored about 5 behinds in a row, North went down once and goaled. Then the rains came.
In the Grand Final the Eagles absolutely dominated the second quarter again but kicked some brilliant goals.
I actually thought North were only the third last year but winning a number of close games and the short season allowed North to play off.
This year with Partington back in the side, I still fancy Glenelg to go top.
And this isn't meant to be a criticism of only Glenelg but why do sides only "take the game on" when they are well behind. I have seen both Glenelg's games against Norwood and also Saturday nights game and once they changed their game style the game changed completely.

Torrens were particularly unlucky not to win the Preliminary Final when North were saved by a technical umpiring decision.
Port in 1982 was a shock. They were the victims of the original 19th man saga in the Second Semi Final and then lost the Preliminary Final by a point when Granger should have been paid a free but given his antics that day it was justice that he wasn't.
Central in 1979 were too immature to win the flag and South 1991 were Minor Premier but hardly a scribe expected them to win the Second Semi and then they met a rampant West in the Preliminary Final. Because of the quirk of the draw in a 9 team competition, North had to virtually forfeit any chance of being Minor Premier in 1991.
In 1970, Sturt were 17-3, but they had been 17-0. Jack Oatey gave them a Bart Cummings preparation.

Perhaps the wrong forum, but what was the story of these incidents RIG?

In the final seconds of the 1963 Preliminary Final, Theo "Hank" Lindner marked in North's defence between the goal and behind post. He then kicked very poorly and his kick was marked by Bob Shearman about 35 yards out. The umpire ruled that Hank hadn't kicked over his mark and ordered him to retake the kick. This time the siren rang as the ball was in the air after Hank's kick. I was 8 years of age but incredibly I can still remember seeing the incident. Also Shearman would have been odds on to goal. Us oldtimers remember him as a magnificent kick and shot for goal
.
In the 1982 Second semi Final Norwood started the last quarter with 19 men on the field. Trevor Gill's article in the News on the following Monday suggests that they only had 19 men on the ground for about 1 minute but the general consensus is that they had 19 men on the ground for 5 minutes.

Where people's memories vary is that Neil Balme is adamant that Port kicked 3 goals 1 behind whilst Norwood had 19 men on the field, a Port player I know says that Norwood kicked 3 goals 1 behind so who knows. Incredibly Norwood won the game by 19 points.

A postscript to that game is that John Cahill stated that he would have hated to win a game that way.

I was quietly confident going into the match thinking that all the pressure would be on Glenelg and also noting that we have been right with them for much of the matches we played against them this year.

Thought that the dominant performance we put on for the best part of 3 quarters was enabled by great games from some of our less heralded players – players like Firns, Jungfer, Rowland, Commitgianni all lifted a gear to assist the usual suspects Tsitas, Knights, Hayes, Stengle etc.
The Tsitas tackle in the last quarter was fantastic and potentially won the game for us with that act.

Who knows if we will play the Bays in the GF? South have got their mojo back and I could very easily see them winning. But if there is a next time they will have Partington and we are unlikely to have Goldy so will be interesting to see how we go. Who comes in for Goldy? If the same team balance is required then you’d have to expect it would be Litster or Macfarlane. I’d love to see the former get a game because he has serious talent but Macfarlane bring speed and class and has been building after coming back from injury and spending the last few weeks in the reserves.

Much to my chagrin, I thought that Firns was absolutely outstanding in last year's Grand Final as well. He looks to be a big game player.

You know absolutely what you will get from Firns....toughness and competitiveness. I wouldn't want him to be kicking for the winning goal from 40 metres out though.

Historically this result wasn't unexpected, if there's one game were crap at even more so than GFs is 2nd Semi Finals. I think we've only ever won four, 73, 75, 85 and "that year"

69, 76, 77, 81, 84, 86, 08, 09, 19, 21.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

If the rank outsider Bays sneak a win against the in form Panthers ;), then the grand final would be between the two losingest grand final teams in history, would it not?

(Not counting the inferior record of interlopers)

No it would not.

I would say Port have lost the most grand finals.
