Was always on the cards.
Well before the end of the season it was common knowledge that at least a dozen were finishing up

Making way for an ex-afl influx?
Doubtful.
In for a couple of lean years with getting games into the kids and look for some talent on the cheap

Having spoken to their former captain this morning, it isn't the end of the exodus yet either... expect a further announcement or two later.

We all know the answer to keeping more quality in the competition but the SANFL keeps refusing to bring the salary cap back up. With the amount of time the guys put in, the pay is generally disgusting.

AFLW players are getting more, what a joke.

Allegedly, the salary cap is still around the $400,000 mark because the AFL is giving each SANFL club around $200,000 PA,
once that ceases, then the cap will go up.

Nope, Salary cap is just over $200 000 according to a club CEO. They want it to be $300 000 but there's two clubs that the SANFL fear would fall over of it was anymore than $200 000.

My longstanding view that I've put on here many times is that all the non-AFL aligned SANFL, WAFL and VFL clubs should have a $1 Million salary cap paid for by the AFL.

it would still only be 10% of the AFL salary cap but for a competition that is at least 75% as good.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

The only two clubs for whom the salary cap would be relevant? The other clubs seem to be getting around it by gaining 'employment' for their players.

Cheers

I suggested something similar some time ago (it would be just a drop in the ocean with all the profits the Afl enjoy) but the suggestion was poohhoed by the "experts" as they complained the Football Clubs coundn't be tusted to spend the money wisely and would just waste it with unnecessary expansions

The AFL shouldn't get out of this either.
Firstly, the SANFL still provides a fallback for those who may have lost their way, ie Stengle.
Secondly, if they truly wanted Aussie Rules to be the number one sport they'd be assisting in getting average SANFL and WAFL crowds to around 5000 and make that second tier like whuffer said. But the AFL don't want Aussie Rules to dominate the sporting landscape, the AFL want the AFL to dominate it.

Also think changes to the labour market have an influence. Kids who maybe became bank tellers or clerks now go to uni because that is pushed and there are fewer jobs in banks, especially at entry level. Previously they were earning a full time wage and had paths within the bank or wherever available to them by their mid-20's. Now they're at Uni not earning much and starting their careers 3-5 years later. Similarly, for the blue-collar, there are not the manufacturing jobs there once was.

Good take, spot on. The biggest player in the market has become the custodian of the game, and are more interested in maintaining their position than the integrity and promotion of the sport. A sort of regulatory capture.

Imagine if the fossil fuel industry were put in charge of our Environment policy. Oh, hang on ...
