Not much I can add here that’s not already been said.

Icon of the game.

RIP.

Russell was a legend in every respect.
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

The footy world's a poorer place for Russell's passing. A man who changed games on the field, and lives off of it.

May he rest in peace and his legacy live long.

Too soon, take away his on field exploits, the fact no one has a bad word to say about him and almost everyone has a Russ story speaks volumes for him. Was only last year he was still influencing the next generations in his programs.

I hope he does have a state funeral.
He's truly worthy of one.

As a glenelg supporter his battles with Marker are a clear memory for me.

Fairest and best summed him up perfectly.

Condolences to all you Port people.

Yes. I was surprised such a fair player was even acceptable at Port Adelaide. ;)

I was watching some footage of Ebert over the weekend including the documentary 'Russell Ebert The Story' posted on the Bring Back the Bars social media page. Being too young to see Ebert live I've only got videos to see what he did as a footballer.

The two things that I thought was impressive and enjoyed watching this AFL season was the burst speed away from a contest and then the lateral movement at speed to evade opponents from star Melbourne premiership pair Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca.

Those two attributes were on show and the main thing I noticed in the footage I've watched of Ebert, his burst speed away from a contest and then his lateral movement at speed was incredible. He obviously had incredible speed, power and agility.

He wasn't slow but he wouldn't win the GF day sprint either, but his explosiveness from the contest was what made him look fast. He's as powerful as I can recall a midfielder being. He'd break free from tackles into space and deliver the ball with precision and in the unlikely event he was tackled it would only be around the hips as he would invariably get his arms free to dispose of the ball.

Real Fans of SANFL Facebook site posting a copy of the obituary in todays paper by the SANFL....

The first paragraph refers to Russell.

The middle paragraph is written about Brian Faehse of West Adelaide....

The last paragraph refers to Russell and his family.

Someone has made an horrific copy and paste mistake.

The reality was/is that he was ahead of his time.

In an era where skill was the major pre-requisite to play league footy, he brought the physical attributes of the modern day footballers of size, power and agility along with a fierce determination and dedication to the task.

Add to the fact he was a two sided player (so he met criteria one, had footy skills in abundance) and you get a player who was at least 20 years ahead of his time.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I've seen footage of him doing a 50 metre left foot drop kick lace out to a teammate.
