How many times in the last 15yrs have we seen clubs promoted, win flags, or have solid seasons and 12 months later are required to either drop a division (or 2), or not field a side.

How many times has one of those clubs been a club you'd consider 'well run' with good governance and processes in place?

Every year, same shit, different club.

Maybe these "local people trying to keep community alive and enjoy a football club and become part of something" have their objectives distorted, their process wrong and need to realise that instant success isn't the recipe for a sustainable future.

Is this the problem with compulsory promotion/relegation?

There are probably some clubs that demographically can't go up too many divisions (I'm thinking the likes of Houghton), they could win div 7, be competitive in div 6 but I would think if they ever went up to div 5 they'd be straight back down to 6 the next year so the year in div 5 is almost a waste of time & money.

I wouldn't have a clue though as I've never been involved in the AdFL, so just an outsider looking in

Its probably easy to look at it that way, but i think over the past 10 or so years we've seen a number of clubs completely turn their fortunes around and go from being a regular lower division side to a real powerhouse with a sustainable business model and junior program. Glenunga being one that spring to mind immediately but the likes of Lockleys and others are in that mix also.

It really can be amazing to see what can happen when you get the right committee, enough volunteers to spread the load, the right sponsors and a handy group of players to form your core group that set the culture.

In saying that, fortunes can turn quickly and it can be a hard fall if you dont get it right as we have seen with many. But i do feel there are more getting it right year in and year out than there are getting it wrong.

AND a good junior program Sass! ;-)

Marion and Rosewater will be big improvers this season. Trinity deservedly the clear standout given they only lost 3x minor round matches last season and won 8x games more than the next best returning D6 side.

Para Hills I suspect will slide. Fitzroy I feel will be good - they looked good in the trial against Pulteney last year

It'll be interesting to see how the two D7 sides go coming up - Units may well be the biggest beneficiaries of Smithfield not getting a side up.

Depth will prove the biggest factor, and on that alone it's TOS, Marion, Brahma ahead of the rest.

There will be a huge gap from the best to the worst sides, but the battle for 5th will probably prove tight.

Fitzroy took out the flag from 5th a few years back so the opportunity will always be there if in the mix. division 6 always brings different results late in the season TOS Marion Brahma are the teams to beat wouldn't be surprised that central United have a strong year since Smithfield don't have a team a few might head out to mofflin

How are teams looking in this Div?
I know para hills are struggling for numbers under 40 players registered and the coach has lost the playing group already. Gonna be a long year there.
Also heard west Croydon only having 35 registered.
Only 3 weeks from round 1.

Rego numbers count for stuff all - so many people every year leave things until the last minute because they're lazy AF.

The year before I went to Pulteney, apparently they'd average around 10-12 to training, and some nights as low as 6.

Funnily enough, clubs who think dropping teams or field less teams will increase commitment are narrow sighted - it doesn't, it just serves to cut those at the margins or give those who aren't 100% in an easy out.. Guess this is why clubs with C grade sides as well are so important - you still get those C graders who want to be a part of something bolstering your numbers.

I’m one of those people who think B and C Graders are the most important people at the club, they are the ones that play for the love of the game

Clubs exist to win A Grade premierships but clubs don’t exist without lower grades and that has never been more obvious than this off season

100% agree with you there.
How are other clubs going for numbers.
Do you think it’s time to train once a week on a Wednesday. A good solid session or not at that point yet.
