Previously consisting of seven minor round matches before a Grand Final in May, the Torrens University U16 season will now mirror the U18s by including 18 minor rounds before concluding on August 20.

Finals for both grades will follow this, with dates, venues and times to be confirmed later in the season.

The majority of matches for the U18s and U16s will be played on Saturdays, with the same teams playing at the same venue one after the other.

Round 4 will include Eagles and West clashing on Easter Thursday night ahead of the remaining three games in both grades being contested on Good Friday

Be interesting to see how a full under 16s program affects some local clubs ability to fill sides every week and will make for some interesting scores as well I think.

I know how it will affect most clubs. Badly.

I want to see what the college players are required to do...

They will 100% be playing school footy

I can see some issues with this when the AFL talent scouts are looking at the SANFL 16's comp and little Johnny is stuck at school footy...

Getting flogged by Glenelg as we speak

About to be 3 games out the finals, lowest % in the comp and still have the undefeated top side to play.

Sadly gone backwards this year.

Great idea, gives the talented kids a chance to develop in a high development program before they progress into the high performance 18s rather than languishing in club land.

They should never have moved from the 17 s and 19s 14 years ago.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Who they beat. One game out of the finals and no longer have the lowest percentage.

You are still in the hunt.

If your keen, Richmond at 11 then over to Thebby for 2.15, sleep, Elizabeth at 10 then down to Noarlunga for 2.15.

Some recruiters will do it.

This shows the developing nature of the game for women as they are now playing at younger ages. Great opportunity.

Selectors have finalised a 30-player SA U18 Girls Squad to wear the cherished red guernsey in next month’s AFL National Championships.

With Magarey Medallist Tim Weatherald continuing as coach, the SA U18 Girls team features a wealth of experienced talent from the Hostplus SANFLW League.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, SANFL Female Talent Manager Robbie Neill said the high-calibre of U16 talent included in the squad was also noteworthy.

As many as seven players have earned a berth despite still being eligible for the U16 State team, including Central’s Georgia Mckee, South’s Shae Archbold, Sturt’s India Rasheed and Glenelg’s Violet Patterson.

Under Championship rules, only three U16s can play in each match while two U19 ”over-agers” have also been included in the squad – Sturt’s Kiera Mueller and Eagle Ella Little.

North Adelaide star Hannah Ewings will don the red guernsey for the first time since 2018, after missing the 2019 and 2021 campaigns with serious ankle injuries, sandwiching the absence of the 2020 carnival due to Covid-19.

SA will play three matches, two at home including one at the Adelaide Oval which will be a curtain-raiser to the Adelaide v Richmond AFL game.

The Croweaters will then finish off with a road trip to Melbourne for the third contest against the Allies.

Weatherald will be assisted by senior assistant coach Bill Economou while Bek McMahon (forwards), Craig Lum (midfield) and Jason Rivett (defence) will be SA’s line coaches.

My daughter has played against Violet, Georgia and India. Stars! Best of luck to each of them in particular and the group in general.

I considered taking a swag to X-Convenience Oval, Elizabeth yesterday.

Finished up out there about 7:00pm last night, commentating the Central v Eagles SANFLW clash.

Then back there again this morning at 8:30am to call the Under 18's clash between the Dogs and North.

great result

South Australia’s Under-18 Girls Team issued a stern statement to its rivals after producing a stunning 84-point win in Game 1 of the AFL National Championships against Western Australia at Thebarton Oval.

After naming a strong side on Thursday, the Croweaters displayed why it looked so ominous by slamming on 13 goals to the Sandgropers’ one after the first change.

Leading by just six points at quarter-time, Tim Weatherald’s charges made their move in the second stanza by booting five goals to one en route to opening up a commanding 30-point lead at half-time.

Woodville-West Torrens’ Shineah Goody was outstanding through the midfield for the hosts, racking up 33 disposals, 10 marks, five clearances, seven tackles and a goal, ensuring she would be nominated as SA’s best.

North Adelaide’s Hannah Ewings, playing her first State game since 2018, and Central’s 15-year-old talent Georgia Mckee, were also damaging by booting three goals each from 20 possessions.

Ewings’ second term major was a particular highlight after she launched from long range as SA began to take control of the contest before the main change.

Norwood’s hard-working Lana Schwerdt transformed her excellent Hostplus SANFLW League form onto the national stage, collecting 22 disposals and four clearances while Eagle Ella Little also impressed after converting a strong mark in the goal square.

Redleg Sachi Syme kicked two goals, her first getting the ball rolling on the scoreboard for the hosts who made their first inside 50m entry count.

SA’s dominance was reflected in the final overall numbers, winning 125 more disposals and 16 more clearances while also taking 18 more marks and engineering 16 more inside 50 entries than the Sandgropers.

After winning their first game of the AFL U18 Girls National Championship, the Croweaters will now turn their attention toward facing Victoria Country next Saturday at Adelaide Oval, a curtain-rasier to the Adelaide v Richmond AFL clash.

What a magnificent performance. Look at the pride on those faces. Might also add that guernsey is just about perfect.

South Australia has dominated All-Australian selection with eight players and coach Tim Weatherald selected in the elite group after an undefeated U18 AFLW National Championships campaign.

Recording an average winning margin of 59 points across their three victorious matches, the Croweaters’ stunning performance has been fittingly recognised after defeating Western Australia, Victoria Country and Victoria Metro in succession.

Magarey Medallist Tim Weatherald is the first South Australian to be named as an U18 AFLW All-Australian coach while Woodville-West Torrens midfielder Shineah Goody has been awarded the MVP of the Championships after earlier being named SA’s MVP.

”The strength of South Australia’s success at the Championships is built on the back of our eight SANFL clubs and the tremendous development of the Hostplus SANFLW League,” SANFL Head of Talent Brenton Phillips said.

”The addition of the SANFLW Development League this year, coupled with the ongoing development from U16 and U14 level, has certainly rocketed us into being a championship-winning team.

”We are immensely proud of what the girls have achieved, guided by SA U18 Coach Tim Weatherald, SANFL Female Talent Manager Robbie Neill and the entire SANFL talent staff.’’

Goody starred throughout the tournament, capping off her individual campaign with an eye-catching display against Victoria Metro in which she tallied 27 disposals, six clearances and seven tackles to go with her two game-breaking goals.

North Adelaide’s Hannah Ewings and Central District’s Georgia McKee were equally dynamic with their ability to hit the scoreboard and create opportunities while playing through the midfield and attack.

Norwood’s Sachi Syme and West’s Keeley Kustermann were consistent with their ball-winning ability through the middle of the ground while Glenelg’s Sarah Goodwin provided plenty of drive from half-back and the centre square.

Reliable Roosters defender Amelie Borg and mobile Bays ruck Matilda Scholz displayed why they loom as exciting key-position prospects by controlling the air and impacting at ground level.
