Maharaj filled his boots with back to back 7 wicket hauls in each test.

Along with Rabada and Markram Nortje is another South African who chose IPL over playing for his country.

I'm a bit surprised he made the call himself but it seemed as though the ECB weren't going to make the call for him.

Exactly, will be interesting to see who be will the next captain. The most likely candidate is Stokes but that is obviously alot of extra responsibility for him.

Anyone else reckon that bloke is massively overrated? Yeah he has produced some special performances no doubt, but the majority of time he looks like a very frustrated cricketer who knows what he is capable of but can't get there often enough. People comparing him to Botham make me laugh.

No. Hated him for a while, ultra impressed with him nowadays, has a huge ticker and if their batting wasn't so brittle his average would be a lot more healthier.

No comparison with Botham, I agree.

However, he stands up when it counts. Really he leaves the other England guys for dead when the going gets tough.

And agreed with LM that his batting average would be a bit better with stronger batsmen lower down, although I agree even at his best he'd probably never be anything better than a number 6 batsman in a good test side.

Giving him the captaincy seems like a no-brainer to me. I'm actually a little disappointed, might make it slightly harder for Australia to retain the Ashes!!

Stokes is a gun and in this day and age is not overrated IMO, Australia would kill for a cricketer like him and hopefully we have found a cricketer like him in Cameron Green. I agree that he shouldn't be compared to Botham, that is laughable but geez he's good and someone you have to enjoy watching.

Not until he can go out and score a ton after choofing down 3 cones during the luncheon interval.

Ben Stokes in test cricket.

Batting average 35.89 (Matt Renshaw averages 33.47)
Bowling average 32.12 (Simon Katich averaged 30.23)

He's a good cricketer, but his output doesn't match the hype imo.

Stats don't quite him justice to be fair. He's a very selfless team player and he's had to bat to high up due to our lack of quality. In big moments he's usually delivered, same in white ball cricket. He's probably slightly overrated because he's so exhilarating at his best but don't just judge him on his stats as he's a big moment guy.

Reckon Green will have Stokes covered easily by the end of their careers. England have just appointed Michael
Slater as their captain. As the late Shane Warne once famously said 'tick...tick....tick...'

Kent's Nathan Gilchrist has now been dismissed for six consecutive ducks, including three pairs and three golden ducks.

He's equalled the record for the most ducks in consecutive innings in men's first-class cricket.
