AFLW 2022

Talk on the national game

Re: AFLW 2022

The new agreement has been signed today, with the average AFLW player now receiving $6,310 per game.

Average player salaries will increase by 94 per cent across the board, going from $23,904 to $46,280. It’s part of a four-tier system in which the top tier will receive $71,935 – up from $37,115 this year.

Season seven of the competition will consist of 10 home and away games followed by four finals - one additional final compared to season six - with four new teams (Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney Swans) joining the code.

By contrast, SANFL (mens) players in 2022 are on an average of $406 per game.
Men's AFL still bring in the big bucks, with the average wage per game at $26,759.

Good outcome for the women.

Only way to bridge the gap and improve the level is to properly remunerate.

Which is exactly what they should be doing to SANFL footy, which is a sustainable product. AFLW in its current form simply isn’t sustainable. If you treated this as a business you’d be broke in no time.

That money (coming from the mens AFL) should be channeled through to the SANFL, WAFL etc before these leagues die a slow death.

You’d get more money playing in the Barossa than you would in the SANFL and that is simply ridiculous.

Happy to cop the abuse I foresee coming.

Must be something in Red Cans or Red bottles as I 100% agree with you. We obviously function at a higher cognitive level.

I’ve said it several times on here already.

SANFL players wage/ cap should be 10% of their AFL counterparts.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

What will/is a worry for this league is the decline in attendances. Not on their own. The pre covid seasons to current seasons has also seen the introduction of paid attendance. I wonder what the change in season timing will do as well?

2022 144,271 total 1924 avg
2021 157,231 total 2312 avg
2020 season abandoned
2019 251,792 total 6626 avg
2018 174,012 total 6003 avg
2017 198,020 total 6828 avg

With more sides and thus more matches to come there are some challenging times for the game as a TV spectacle which is where the money comes from.

Out of curiosity how does that trend with the AFL attendances, is the percentage of decline similar for both men and women.

So obviously mens is bouncing back from last year somewhat whilst the women's attendances continue to decline.

I wonder if attendances will increase with the expansion clubs coming in having a first year 'boom'. I would expect Port will get reasonable attendances playing games at Alberton.

The "feel" amongst people I know is that they/we can't wait for it to kick off, I know I'm looking forward too it.

The Precinct will be open ( the redeveloped upstairs at the Port Club with a viewing deck on the top seating levels of the Bob Quinn Stand ) and on a balmy early summer afternoon a wander around to the hallowed turf for some bevvies on the deck watching the footy, I think we'll get some goods crowds. There's a passionate core that go to anything at Alberton and a growing female football presence in the local clubs, I can see good numbers going through the gates.

Yeah agree and then throw in the Erin Phillips factor as well. Reminiscent of when Gavin Wanganeen came back to the Power.

I agree with you - the way state leagues have been treated is terrible. There is no incentive for young people to strive to play at the highest level they can anymore - once they finish the underage stuff, they're better off chasing big coin in local leagues than training 3-4 times a week for league footy.

The prestige of state leagues has dropped away sadly and as the next best level below AFL it should be put on a pedestal and strongly supported.

Is AFLW better served as a stand alone comp running at a different time, or would they benefit more from being aligned to the Men's competition and having double headers each week?

Either a curtain raiser for the Men's or vice versa

Double headers would mean most if not all womens games would be competing for tv viewers with a mens game especially on Saturday/Sunday where there are multiple games throughout the day/evening.

How would you fit in womens games on tv when you have 1:15pm, 4:05pm, 7pm Saturday games and 1:40pm, 2:50pm, 4:50pm Sunday games.

Double headers in the traditional sense would be great, but as pointed out already, won't work from a tv perspective.

Also, modern footballers at modern stadiums don't work anymore either.
Gone are the days of the b-grade finishing and the A-grade starting 20 minutes later.
AFL players require 2 hours to warm up (apparently). Unlike the old grounds where they could go out and have a kick on the second oval while the B-grade were playing, they can't anymore as stadiums are surrounded by carparks not open space (Adel Oval one of a few exceptions).
Marvel Stadium the perfect example of where there isn't a secondary ground for the A-graders to warm up while the B-graders are playing.
So now the break from the end of the curtain raiser to the start of the main game needs to be well over an hour, and the double header impact is lost.

Finally the fixtures are a long way from aligning. Yes the current 10 rounds will be expanded, however the intention is to get to 17 rounds (play each side once), not the full 22 rounds. That might come in time, but isn't here yet. Therefore, aligning the women's fixture to the mens has a further challenge.

I'm interested in where the finals especially grand finals will be played when they expect large crowds.

For instance if the Crows or Power were to make it you would presume Adelaide Oval is out of the question as the drop in pitches will be in? Same would be said for MCG & other grounds around you would presume.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Ikon Park is being redeveloped. My understanding is that it could be used as a third metropolitan venue in Victoria which could also hold the AFLW finals.
