Drove 45 seconds to polling both...…lined up for 15 seconds....voting took another 30 seconds, grabbed the free snag on offer on the way out.

That's not my issue,
my issue is forcing thousands of people to make a HUGE decision but they don't know nor care how to vote/why they're voting.
To top it off, the "side" that got the most votes lost!
Very confusing!

The beauty of the system is that while it is compulsory to turn up to vote, the choice to cover your ballot slip completely with crude drawings of dicks is entirely your choice. Vote 1 Cock and Balls!

And that's the thing, you can walk in to most places after lunch or mid arvo, no line up, get your name ticked off and bang your done.

You don't even need to take the forms, you can just say to them once your name is ticked off that your done and walk it. Whilst they will insist that you at least put them in the box, you don't have to.

But you know, a good cock and balls on the ballot paper is worth it.

Google "two party preferred voting system". You might not have voted for them on your primary, but you voted for them on your preferences.

Yes! How simple!
But the thousands of 18 year olds that are voting for the first time have no idea what you are talking about.
It's not explained to them, especially by their parents, because most of them have no idea.
Example, my step daughter had no idea how to vote/who to vote for, Albo rocks up at her school on Friday with the TV entourage, says nice things on air about her so she votes for Labor.
I think that, leading up to an election, it should be explained to kids at school how it works, after all, it's compulsory so it must be important![/quote]Actually it is pretty simple and most young people I have come across understand this.

Yet I get you.

I love that we live in a democracy but I do laugh that people who can barely manage their own household are forced to vote on what's best for our country...…

With the preferences system we use it would be interesting to know whether results would be different if it wasn't mandatory. There would be thousands on thousands probably millions giving preferences to parties that they have no about etc.

Most of us I reckon
I did give a vote to the Seniors United Party of Australia and offset it with a vote for the Legalise Cannabis Party.
See: I can make a difference - they had their best result ever :supz:

Last night Mrs Jimmy told me the Legalise Cannabis Party had their best result ever
I said I had voted for them. The look was priceless  Better than if I said I'd drawn the cock n balls

The alternative would be that only those elites who are engaged in politics and spend all day reading articles on The Guardian website get to vote.

OK, maybe a slight exaggeration, but there are a great many benefits in the entire adult population selecting our government, rather than a smaller subset of that.

I strongly recommend those interested read "From Secret Ballot to Democracy Sausage" by Judith Brett. A really interesting story about how some of the institutions of our elections came about.

My guess is that it would not be very different.

The parties that millions have no clue about generally receive bugger-all votes, and get excluded early in the count anyway.

The Citizens United Climate Nazi Dildo Skeptic Donkey First Party candidates don't really receive any preferences and don't get close to being elected.

Yep, agree, we need more public transport!
Driving to work, putting your car in a carpark & paying $10 or more per day, then not using your car all day until you go home is just DUMB.
In fact, it should be illegal.
