Americans will protest everything under the sun, yet I don't recall there ever been protests over mass shootings and gun control...

If they did, you can almost guarantee that there would be a shooting at the protest.

The one thing I keep reading in the media about people defending the second amendment is that there are "evil people" causing these tragic events. So put something in place to stop evil people being able to carry out these acts. As I understand it you can be underage in certain states and still get access to 'long barrel' weapons. What the hell? There are no background checks in place. I remember a time not so far back where banks were giving people a gun when they opened up an account with them!

On top of this, if I'm going to go crazy and shoot up some location, such as a school, if there is an armed guard there, that's the first person I head for. Once he's taken out, game on! These kids aren't 'that' stupid!

If that were to happen, the NRA will come out with a solution to a solution, that being, MORE armed guards!

Do the NRA think about doing any scenario based analysis, or just default to "more guns" as a solution and stop there.

I see the powers that be over there are already referring to it as a mental health issue as opposed to a gun issue. Nothing will change unfortunately. Especially while the NRA is filling the pockets of the one's making the laws.

Its both.....a sane person doesn't go shooting up 14 kids whether you have access to guns or not.

Even background checks wouldn't have helped in this case as I don't believe the shooter had an prior criminal convictions etc and had no documented mental health issues most likely because he wasn't able to afford health services to see anyone.

The solution that the NRA always proposes just happens to include the purchase of lots more guns. Funny coincidence.

Someone on twitter posted a breakdown of the NRA's donations to each member of the senate.

Now - if it is in any way accurate - any wonder senators block reform to legislation, when an organisation is putting $13m into your pocket!

It would be a good start to maybe not sell assault rifles to 18 year olds in the first place. I reckon that might have helped. Maybe even make them go through a thorough process to get a licence first which includes background checks etc. A bit like we have to do here. Two day course etc. That will weed out a lot of these aresholes.

It definitely would have helped but it’s not the sole solution

A guy that deranged is going to find a way whether it’s using a car to kill, making home made weapons like bombs or using a knife.

You don’t think killing 14 people is ok and let a few little laws stop you when it’s not hard to get on the black market.

It needs a full holistic approach right from there Medicare system through to their gun laws but one change without the other won’t help.

Blame republicans for that, 90% of American citizens want background checks

I remember when my Dad was a Bank Manager in the mid-north and we lived out the back of the branch, I used to go into his office after hours and open the top drawer to look at the gun - then on weekends the staff had some shooting practice in our back yard at tin cans!

When I was a kid I found where the old man used to hide his gun and I'd go out the back and do the same while the olds weren't home.

That was until one day when something ricocheted off the fence and copped me in the eye, I had to tell my parents that a stick got me in the eye while I walked around with a bung peeper for a week or so, I would've had a matching ear if I told them the truth.

My old man had a Winchester 22 and kept it in the bedroom,
one night when mum and dad went out, my brother got it out* and made out he was hunting or something, pulled the trigger and blew a bloody great hole in the bedroom wall, right above mum and dad's bed.
We didn't know it was loaded, luckily I was across the road at Donjer's house that night.

Mum made dad sell the rifle.

Work colleague died of a heart attack yesterday. Had a minor scare about about a month ago and was booked in last Monday to see a specialist and undergo more tests but came down with Covid on the Friday so he had to reschedule for this coming Thursday. Got over Covid and was feeling fine when I spoke to him Sunday and was due to come back to work today. Boss called a meeting this morning to inform us he died yesterday
