SANFL statement: AFL Mid-Season Draft

SANFL congratulates the six Hostplus SANFL League players named in tonight’s AFL mid-season rookie draft who now have an exciting opportunity to play at the highest level of Australian football.

However, SANFL Chief Executive Officer Darren Chandler said the mid-season draft continued to present major challenges for SANFL Clubs who were impacted.

“We have a strong and vibrant men’s State League competition which is well worth protecting by the AFL to ensure the future strength and success of the national competition,” Mr Chandler said.

“We feel for the supporters, members, players, coaches, volunteers and administrators of the SANFL Clubs impacted tonight - there is a huge amount of investment in terms of resource, time and energy which goes into building a SANFL team in pursuit of ultimate success.

“The SANFL and its Clubs always encourage players to aspire to the highest level of Australian football and to play in our thriving State League as a pathway to achieving this.

“Collectively we invest significant time and resources to develop talented players from U13 to U18 level and then through to the Senior competition. As a State, we take great pride in seeing young players progressing to AFL ranks.

“However, the AFL must work with State Leagues to allow players who are ready to play AFL football to move into the AFL system at a time or under conditions that reduces the impact on their SANFL Club.”

Mr Chandler said SANFL and SANFL Clubs were looking forward to the opportunity to discuss the pre-season and mid-season drafts and AFL Club list sizes, among a range of matters, when they meet with AFL representatives at a scheduled meeting later this month.

Well said Darren Chandler
As a long suffering South supporter the AFL draft has been incredibly deflating now for a few years
I certainly agree with encouraging players to reach the highest level, but there has to be a better way
It feels like the AFL think that everyone at lower level clubs is happy if their AFL club is doing well, little do they realise that people actually bleed for their local club, including SANFL, local metro and country clubs

Time for AFL clubs to loan players to SANFL/WAFL/VMQDLFL clubs?

Good luck to them

Mate, we didn’t pay North Melbourne a $25k transfer fee for Durdin.

If an SANFL player is drafted to the AFL, then returns to the SANFL, a fee is paid to their original club if they choose to play somewhere else.

Just like Norwood paid Glenelg for Dom Barry, and Glenelg paid Norwood for Luke Partington.

He’s got plenty of class and knows where the goals are. Give him a couple of pre-seasons at AFL level and he’s the right age to step in and be a very good AFL player when Geelong’s older brigade are coming to an end. A long term pick for Geelong I think and he has the attributes to play elsewhere than just a small forward role after some more development.

From an Eagles point of view - very glad to keep Ballenden and glad to see Williams get an opportunity.

This is the thing that shits me, the mid season draft was brought in to help teams fill a stop gap they're struggling with straight away.
There's no way Williams will get into Geelongs team this year and possibly next outside something extraordinary happening.
Geelong has so many forwards they're playing some down back!
If they'd recruited a ruckman I'd say fair enough.
The AFL need to readdress the MSD but I doubt they care enough to bother.

Agree about the purpose of the MSD. Perhaps there needs to be a rule that any player selected in the MSD must play AFL the next game. That will cause a re-think by the AFL Clubs.

Swap the mid season draft for mid season trades. The AFL clubs are using the MSD to fill their boots, not to plug gaps. If they have a desperate need then use trades to get their players from other clubs.

Problem being that a trade would take two to tango..and potentially prevent a club from filling the gap they need. I don’t see the AFL backing down as long as they see state leagues as primarily development leagues. Until that attitude changes we will continue to be disrespected.

I just think the AFL has rushed too quickly into setting up the MSD without properly thinking it through. To my mind some of these are:

1. Is a MSD actually needed given 90% of the players drafted will just be wallowing in the VFL and will never play an AFL game? Such players weren't good enough to get drafted first time around . Further, in drafting them mid-season they won't have the fitness base of the rest of the AFL squad who have all done pre-seasons.
2. Why wouldn't the AFL implement an AFL mid-season trade period rather than a mid-season draft?
3. How much compensation is sufficient for the club whose player they raided? How did they settle on $10k?

Having rushed it the MSD has become completely farcical. Either scrap it or do it right.

At the same time there can be benefits for the SANFL from the MSD as it gives older players who have missed out on drafts some incentive to stay around when in it's absence they might go play bush footy. Also it can act as a lure to help clubs recruit players from interstate, particularly those recently delisted from AFL clubs. Shifting them is hard. But the potential of an MSD might provide a lure to get them over here. Okay, some players like Ballenden missed out but now he is here living in Adelaide he might actually enjoy it here.

If the MSD is here to stay I wonder whether the SANFL have done enough regarding how they could adapt? e.g. if the Crows and Power are allowed to add to their squads mid season then why can't the other SANFL teams?

Look at the Bauer/north Adelaide players reaction on Facebook.

The MSD is here to stay and only going to grow.

Compensation should be $100k out of the AFL clubs pocket.
You want to take someone at the MSD you cough up $100k

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, guess it will squeeze in here:

I turned on the radio in the car at about 6:50 PM tonight and discovered Gordon Armstrong talking SANFL with the two presenters on Coast FM. Is this a regular thing?
