They have to show they can do it without a club relocating.
And if one does then so be it.

Less teams and play everyone twice to get the extra games for broadcast

Yes. Go with 19 teams. The fixture is so comprised as it is that making it work with the extra team shouldn't be an issue.

Yes but less teams overall, AFL needs to be a 16 team comp maximum, AFL won't reduce it though. Play each other twice 1 x home, 1 x away. Get rid of pre season comp. Shorter games but less break between games, playing Thursday to Monday.

24 teams.
4 conferences of 6 teams.
Play each side in your conference twice (10 games)
Play 3 sides from each other conference once (9 games)
Top 2 each conference qualify for finals
Next highest ranking 4 sides qualify as finals wildcard
12 team finals series,

Matches played Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon - big clubs allocated a set weekly timeslot e.g. Collingwood Friday night, Richmond Saturday night.

Positions end of season determine seedings for next season and fixture accordingly for cross-conference clashes.

I'll go the other way, 20 teams, normal game length. Play each other once a season, reverse the home/away the following season. Less is more.

Top 8 remains.

Extend the squads to 50 I totally agree with- mid season trade only, no draft.

**** off Thursday nights though. Would prefer Monday night.

Would also like the Top 12 picks randomly drawn to the bottom 12 teams the next year- but that is a different argument.

Personally I think if the AFL was living in a perfect world they would love 20 teams...……10 Victorian teams in one conference and 10 other teams all in one conference.

This would allow clubs to play each team twice for an 18 game season...…...you then get two of your blockbusters every year guaranteed for all the clubs.

Games Played on:
Thursday Night
Friday Night x 2
Saturday
Saturday Night x2
Sunday Midday
Sunday Afternoon
Sunday Evening
Monday Evening

I think the 20 teams is an absolute cert which is why the AFL is testing the waters with Thursday Night, Friday Night x 2 and Monday Night games as they know they will need those timeslots in the near future.

Me personally coming from a soccer background would have 20 teams one from Tassie and NT to be truly national competition. Then 19 games in a year playing each team once. Each year rotate home and away.....sadly this doesn't make you as much money both in ticket sales and tv viewers as you lose your double blockbusters so will never happen.

Hate Thursdays, I miss the first half due to footy training.

On the other hand love Monday night footy, nothing beats going to work on a Monday knowing you've got some decent tv to watch that night.
