Benny Hill had a recurring sketch with him saying someone had said they don't need glasses as they could easily see that cat with one eye coming in. Pause. That cat's not coming in it's going out.

My mum always told me if I didn't stop I'd go blind. Sure enough, the eyesight is getting progressively worse.

Not in the know, but similar position to you and same concern. Eyesight has continued to diminish - don't know whether that's natural, or hastened by wearing glasses which I do more and more.

The optometrist said it's a myth, he reckons only if you have the wrong strength of glasses will harm your eyesight. I left my check up for 7 years so I was always going to need a change, he said I'm less likely to need one if I wear specs more often, but not when I'm sitting in front of the computer if I don't struggle to read.

My eyesight has slowly got worse over the years. I was told I had astigmatism when I was 25 and only when I reached 35/40 I started wearing glasses regularly. Now when I take my glasses off, I have to really squint to see, so I think my eyesight has been made worse by wearing them constantly. So I'd prefer to have them on, than off.

However, in saying that, I'm not an expert, that's just my opinion on the matter.

It takes time for the peepers to adjust, if they help you, wear them, I'm long sided so I can get away with not wearing for most of the time.

If I wear my prescription sunnies all day then everything is blurry for a while when I take them off.

I appreciated everyone's feedback today, it enabled me to ask a lot of questions. They are one of the two most important senses that we have so we need to look after them without costing us the earth.

The eldest did a free trial on ancestry after she learned of the family "secrets"... got back a fair way quickly, can be super expensive if you go through with the subscription

Should've read the conditions better.

I did it, and got the DNA test. Easy to lose yourself for hours in there trying to piece the puzzle together - but really when i look back, was a waste of time.

I was hoping to find out more about my family - who they were etc.. but coz i have very little knowledge of my family beyond my mum, made it near impossible.

My cousin on my Mum's side is doing a mountain of work on ours, he's got an enormous amount of information.

On my Dad's side I managed to find through Ancestry the house his Dad was born in in Cardiff, he went there back in 2015/16 and got to see the place his Grandmother raised his Father. I found a Census from early 1900's where his Dad's brother was about 3 or 4 I think, my Pop hadn't been born yet. Pop actually stowed away when he was about 12 or 13, ended up in Perth and made his way to Adelaide in the mid 1920's.

One of the brothers actually ended up quite high up at Ford Motor Co in Canada, I never managed to find much after that.

I used family search https://www.familysearch.org/australia/ and managed to go back 6 generations, got to England Newcastle Upon Tyne 1821 (first family name to come over) but could not definitively piece together history from any further back.
It is free which is good, theres heaps on info on there and you can kindof get a taste for it without paying the $.
One day I will probably do a trial on Ancestry.com to try and get that overseas link. Often one link opens up a whole heap of work that others have already done which is great.
Worth doing i reckon, I began and have generally focussed on looking for my family name but you soon realise that is a piss in the ocean of your ancestry once the tree starts expanding.

ah, ok - i was going to say that i've heard that Ancestory isn't much chop for finding indigenous heritage - that's best searched for at places like state records, or regional local history centres...depending on how far you want to go back.
