No wonder the other States take the piss out of us.

I understand why we still have them but it’s time for change, surely!

personally, i completely disagree.

people only have a certain amount of money to spend. shops being open longer isnt magically going to give everyone more disposable income.

it would start with allowing longer trading, then the push would come for getting rid of weekend and sunday loadings for the staff working those days, and it would end with retail workers being basically slaves. no breaks, no benefits, only hours upon hours of retail hell.

i may be biased from my years working retail

Serious question: a person goes to Uni during the week and works weekends at a pub or shop
Do they get Saturday, Sunday & Public Holiday loading?

Yes

OK - this is what I dont understand
The loading system was to compensate people for the (extra) work on weekends or public holidays.
I have no problem with people who work a full week (35 hours) getting a loading on weekends and public holidays (which is the original intention) but YTF does someone get the loading when they haven't worked during the week?
The entire week / weekend regime has been completely shunted out the door in the 80's - **** me - if you didn't your cash from the bank by 4pm Friday you were screwed. Petrol stations shut at 12 noon on Saturdays. You could only get a beer on Sundays if you were a bona fide traveller (Eagle on the Hill made a fortune out of us). Plus you got taxed at the top tax rate for a second job or overtime.

But the old weekend / after hours loading system remains as it was back then.

Funnily enough - I still pay my staff holiday loading!

Been saying the same for years Jimmy.

What makes a kid on Sunday who works 5 hours more important than the people who work 9-5 during the week. Ridiculous

We are a 7 day a week working society now.

"we" most certainly are not.

my work is currently trying to bring in saturday openings. i certainly wont be doing any weekends, regardless of how they try to spin it. spending time with the wife and kids is way more important to me than my job.

Perhaps all workplaces should close Saturday and Sunday so “we” all can spend time with our families

I’m with you here as I’m not working weekends either but there are others who would be willing here to work as that suits their family environment.

Plus it will create extra jobs if needed(at a cost I know).

Understand your points but other than government positions, a majority of workplaces have weekend work as most industries have become a 7 day week. Don’t want to work, don’t. If penalty rates were abolished no doubt there would end up being more people employed.

Also those that do want to work, reduce their tax on the second job and overtime.

Just because the world operates for 7 days a week now doesn't make Saturday or Sunday any less valuable.

how will it create more jobs?

the rest of us arent going to magically have more money to spend because the shops are open more hours.

we will be spending the same amount, over a longer timeframe, which will increase the cost of shops doing business, for no monetary gain. all it will do is increase inflation, as shops will have to raise prices to cover their extra opening hours

Brodlach wrote:Perhaps all workplaces should close Saturday and Sunday so “we” all can spend time with our families

great idea. do it. cant think of a worse way to spend my weekend than going shopping.
