Our inspections of this vehicle prior and after rental indicate the damage was sustained whilst in your or Your Authorised Additional Driver’s control. As you have selected the Premium Protection option, you have a Damage Recovery Fee of $385 plus tax, however this option does not cover any tyre or windscreen damage Therefore, you are liable for the cost of repairs. In accordance with the Terms and Conditions of your rental, you will be charged accordingly

Hire car insurance is the BIGGEST scam going around
There's probably a $2.5k or $5k excess unless you paid to bring it down
We've got an annual corporate travel policy that brings the excess down
Did you pay for it on your credit card? You may have insurance under that
As Booney said - ask them for the previous report
I'm not 100% sure but ask them if they are subject to AFCA https://www.afca.org.au/ That will scare the bejesus out of them if they are

You need to check and photograph every part of the car before leaving the premises
We have caught them many times scamming our clients

Check your credit card first - it wil lbe covered by that if you get free insurance and paid for it with the card

If not:
You haven't got a lot of hope unless you have proof it wasn't there
Send the photo to a local windscreen fixer and ask them how much they would charge - some times they can just fix the crack at a fraction of the cost
Also - make sure you ask for the original receipt to fix. We caught them charging twice the actual repair cost as an "admin fee"

I was shitting myself when I had to do a mercy dash to Queensland when the lad ended up in hospital for a month over Christmas.

Got to Coolongatta around 10:30pm and had to rush straight to the hospital.

It was dark so I couldn't inspect the vehicle, I didn't go near it for 3 days once I got to the hospital and then when I did I noticed some massive scratches on the rear bumper that looked like pram marks getting dragged out the the back door, there was nothing on the inspection report though.

The pricks charged me $400 for fuel a couple of weeks ago.
Said I returned it empty which was bullshit.
They charged me a full tank x $5 a litre.

Lucky I paid the petrol station by credit card and was able to send them the statement that proved I spent $100.
They even said, ‘how do we know it was for petrol or you didn’t put it in another car’.
I said coz I live in another State ya peanut!

Lucky they reimbursed me the $400.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

THanks Gents, that gives me so clues on how to attack this...my wife actually took pics of some scratches on the car's body when we picked it up, never thought of taking one of the windscreen though.

I just dont know how they can expect us to avoid a flying rock flicked up from another car?

They are all crooked, try and rip off people

Had similar experience where they claimed scratchings on car, wanted to charge ridiculous amount. Was load of crap. Said was going to Ombudsman, not paying, see you in court, eventually all disappeared and got deposit back.

Europcar are the worst. Are now on my banned list after a couple of horror experiences with them.
We got speeding tickets dated 6 months after returning the car in Germany, fuel bills despite filling up 50m from car return station etc. Took months to get it sorted and they even had deducted costs from our CC without authorisation. Absolute scammers

Rule #1: Always use a credit card
Rule #2: Use AMEX if you can
Rule #3: When in doubt - start at Rule #1

The credit card suppliers are legally required to act on your behalf in a dispute
AMEX are very good at sticking up for you
They will freeze the payment until it is sorted and assist you in the dispute
It gives you a lot more muscle when they are involved

I've used it many times to fix a problem and been successful 100% of the time
Not just hire cars but anything you put on it
I even got my money back when an overseas hotel went broke.
Fortunately it was within the 90 days and I disputed it (after some good advice that I could)

I've heard Paypal do something similar but I refuse to be coerced into using it
Some OS hotels only let you pay via them but I just dig my heels in until they agree to accept AMEX

I can confirm that PayPal do do this. I had a present for my wife not turn up (she of course said that I didn't actually buy anything). I raised a dispute got all of my money back after they investigated the issue. I find it the safest way to pay across the internet with a safety net.

Blew up like you wouldn't believe. X-rays and ultra sound showed no breaks but some bone bruising on the tibia. Had Thursday and Friday on the lounge icing and elevating, stiff* as all buggery and several shades of yellow/orange/purple/blue currently on display. F*cking sore.
