Port claim they knew about the issue, but took 3 weeks to send him into surgery?

Who's the common denominator here... think the lad needs to take a little responsibility. Judging by his past, he's not the most honest person going around. They probably both didn't know the extent of the injury.

They didn't, there lies the ineptness of this organisation. But they're square, that's the main thing.

A wet and windy end to our season that sees us finish with just 1 W from our first AFL W campaign.
We had plenty of the footy, especially in the first half, however without Gemma up forward, we struggled to convert our entries into scores and other than a last quarter scramble, we were basically goalless for the entire contest.

Essendon too good and they run out 27 point winners.

So we look to next season, and the changes that need to be made.
Obviously a full preseason to get fitter and stronger will help, not to mention the benefits of the team learning more about footy itself.
Another forward and a second ruck will both be on the agenda.
A little bit of pace through the middle wouldn't hurt either.
Then its just a matter of picking up more kids as they come out of the junior programs having played footy continuously.

So without knowing when next season starts, how long it will be, how big the squads are, who will go home or look elsewhere for more opportunity, or simply move away from footy to focus on careers, study or any other aspect of life, lets have a look at what we might consider to do with our list.

Starting with what worked.
Phillips, Houghton, Ballard, Ewings, O'Dea, Foley and Tahau all get open invites back. They are our best players no doubt about it.

Adding to those 7 I've got another 8 that we clearly want to keep. These girls all bring value to our program:
Dowrick, Mules, Surman, Borg, McGrath, Levicki, Boag and Duursma

Now let's discuss Yorston and Moloney. Both are in our best 21, however together with Dowrick we are a bit slow through the guts. No issues if they both stay, but equally I wouldn't hate it if one of them left and created an opportunity for the next Ewings to slide into the midfield rotations. Having said that, we probably can't afford to let both go.

The next group are ones that provide some upside, but equally haven't shown enough to demand a spot on the list yet. They could hang around and would be fine, but I'm not sure they are driving us to be better. Their position in the squad will come down to what else is available, how spots fit in around existing contracts, if we can recruit something better to replace them, etc. Happy for them to be on the list, but equally wouldn't see it as a huge loss if they weren't: Dunn, de Melo, Syme, Johnson, Laquoiya CM, Hammond and Perry.

Finally, the ones that didn't show enough. Sure, some will potentially already have a deal for next season, and therefore stay, but unless the squads are getting substantially bigger, I wouldn't be offering new contracts to any of the following:
MacLachlan, Halfpenny, Doumanis, Goodwin, Teakle and Litonya CM

Always difficult to get a good read on the players, especially if they only got a couple of games and weren't able to show improvement through other means given no local leagues are being played concurrently. Equally we obviously don't see what goes on behind the scenes at the club, so there might be a surprise or two worth keeping, but for now, that's my two cents!

I think there is a bit to work with on Teakle & Halfpenny. Halfpenny in particular I could see being a big beneficiary of another pre-season, but both are quite slow and Teakle looks a bit lost.

Definitely need a forward and ruck - and more work on forward craft. Speed on and around the ball is critical.

I'd have Dowrick in the definite's to keep - her and Ewings are the key to the midfield and at 20yrs of age, bright future.

De Melo looks clever forward, but little slow, and Perry is opportunistic around goals but doesn't offer a lot in other facets.

The midfield group are ok albeit slow, but win their share. The backline does a tremendous job for the most part - Tahau, O'Dea and to a lesser extent Borg do a great job... the forwards just fail to convert entries.

22 I50's yesterday for 5 scores.

Yeah there was a little bit I liked about HPs first game, however her next few weren't quite there for mine.

If you look at the average AFL career of 6 seasons, it means you need to be turning over 17% of your list each year.
I think AFLW with all the new kids coming through, that number could be even higher.

I've only put 20% in my cull list.

So if you want to keep HP and Teakle, then you need to put a couple of others on the chopping block instead.
