Judging from my friends a lot of footy females don't rate it one bit so i don't know it's a simple gender divide in opinion.
There is some jealousy too from netballers and other traditional female sports at the attention and funding that AFLW receives there is that undercurrent as well, that is an obvious part of it too and can colour some views.
It will all play out in the fullness of time. Good to see participation in sport but obviously we can debate different aspects to it.

We get abit of that up here in the country from the local netball comp. I wouldn't go as far as sabotage, but they have made life very difficult for the football clubs looking to get female teams up and running. Massive fear around what happens to netball in the country region if the female footy takes off.

I'll make this one and only comment on the AFLW, and everyone that doesn't like it should too.
Good luck to the ladies for playing but at the moment it's really shit to watch.

Melbourne premiership captain Daisy Pearce announces her retirement from playing in the AFLW.

Before anyone trashes her just consider your daughter, or sister, or Mum being inspired by her and then STFU.

Daisy did incredible things for women's footy. Also cant be easy returning to the rigors of sport so soon after having twins - to have to juggle two young children and a sport career.. I see how hard it is on my mrs juggling our kids as it is.

Well done Daisy (Pearce that is)

Booney made a good point and I don't get the trashing of people in relation to women's footy. My dad has been heavily involved in women's footy at it's second/third inception in the 90's and the standard has improved from then to now in leaps and bounds.

I worked with a Crows premiership player who was lamenting that she still had to work and it couldn't be a full time gig. I said to her, 100 years ago, the pioneers of Aussie rules must've thought the same thing, but if it weren't for them, we wouldn't have what we have today. Her grandchildren will thank her for her contribution to the sport as it will be much improved in 50 years time. In the meantime, we should enjoy watching it grow.

The negative comments on AFLW are broken down into 50% of blokes who weren't breast fed, or loved by their mothers, and the other 50% are trolls trying to get an LOL in their whatsapp group chat from the lads.

Like many blokes I often find it hard to watch but the skill level will get there eventually. One thing that was there from day one tho was the endeavour, these chicks crack in, they are pretty tough. As you know my niece is a mad keen footy player and supporter (plays for your old mob mate). Talk to her about footy and she just lights up. That and the fact that she can now keep playing beyond the age 14 is massive for girls, women, and the game as a whole. I reckon the expansion was a little premature but the league is on the right track overall.

As for Daisy, she has achieved great things on and off the field and she can retire well satisfied with her contribution to the game. Can any bloke that takes the piss behind a keyboard say the same? Probably not.

regards,

REB

I'm sure most of the male keyboard warriors don't have daughters...... not sure how any man who has daughters could begrudge females having the opportunity to play sport as their profession if they so choose and have the ability.

Not that any of my 3 girls look to have the passion or ability (probably my fault) to play sport at that level but to have the ability to dream is special in its right. Many of my best memories as a kid was playing back yard sport dreaming of taking a boxing day hat-trick or kicking that goal after the final siren. Great times.
