On a positive note, both the U18s and U16s won...can't remember that happening for a fair while.

Plus Jez McLennan (Gold Coast), although he was a Central junior. Mani Liddy (Sturt) would have but was out suspended.

Impressed by South today. Strong Aerial presence and good leg speed on the ball.. looked like a close nit unit as well

Worry for the Dogs is 11 blokes had under 10 possies.... Appears far to few left to few many.

Jez and Lochowiak were the only ones of the new recruits to get over 10 possesions.

We just got beat up in the midfield all day.

Hoskin was dogs best by a mile outside or that our defenders plus Harry Grant were solid.

Marks
South 101
Dogs 62

Contested Marks
South 21
Dogs 8

Of the new recruits McLennan Lochowicz were easily the best whilst Liddle was solid in defence.
Chisholm and Munn were way down on their trial match form
Larkin started well but hardly sighted second half
Pearce registered 1 uncontested mark and 1 kick and a hit out for the day.

In a nutshell Not the start we wanted.

We seemed to lack the run she showed in trial games dont think we had one forward entry where we moved ball quickly and cleanly .Bombing the ball in just played into the hands of the South defenders and we constantly did the same going down the boundary on the grandstand side and were clearly outmarked .

Hoped for better from Pearce but in the end at the Eagles, he couldn't get a reserves game hence his move to Port Districts.

I thought we were at least competitive until 5 minutes into the third quarter. It all seemed to change at that point where we kicked the ball over Grace's head. He was 25 metres out on his own and could have put us within 5 points. Instead, South marked and rushed it down for a goal. Heads dropped, South kicked 4 goals in 5 minutes and that was that. 5 minutes of terribly uncompetitive football killed us. We can't afford to switch off like that. We did it many times last year as well. Had we played great football in the first half? No, but we had at least been in the game, showing good defensive effort.

Admittedly, many sides will struggle against South, particularly down there. I believe we can lift against North next Friday and resurrect our season. That would make it a Good Friday. Either that or we will suffer a painful crucifixion.

One other small positive: it has probably been a long time since we have been above Glenelg Norwood and Port on the table ;)

Have a feeling the Bulldogs maybe looking for an alternative ruckman to Mc Cormack for the next couple of weeks.........

Don't think he was reported at the time (in fact no free kick) but unlikely to escape the review given it concussed the player.

Sounding like you're right. Happened in front of us, looked like a hard bump on the player with the ball at the time, unfortunately player didn't return. No free kick, no report at the time. Gibbs was the only player to slightly remonstrate with a couple of "pushes". Haven't watched it on replay, so don't know if there's any way of challenging it, given player concussed. He'll be a big out for us, Munn and maybe Pickering will have to stand up. Not looking forward to North.

If the umps can’t/couldn’t see a free let alone a report then hard for players to know where they stand.. and with one grainy camera angle would be interesting to know how much forensic examination of the contact was made. I guess though that the new standard is if a head injury occurs then you are suspended regardless. Must be so difficult for players to overcome split second instinct to make contact nowadays .. it’s probably wiser just to “squib out” as we used to say…

He chose to bump a player who had the ball. You either tackle them or try to smother. And, if you are too late, don't tackle as you are likely to have a free paid down the field.

The umpire was directly in line so would not have been able to see the point of impact. The footage on the SANFL website is quite clear.
