Lets put the selectors hat on and name a 17 man squad for WTC/Ashes:

My First XI

Khawaja
Labuschagne
Handscomb
Smith
Head
Green
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Kept Handscomb in the side to bat 3 and shift Marnus up to open. No Warner. Kept the traditional 4 bowlers.

12. Bancroft - weight of runs has him as the back up batsman
13. Inglis - back up keeper and decent enough back up middle order batsman
14. Boland - back up for Cummins/Hazlewood
15. Neser - similar to Bancroft, Shield performance gets him in the Squad and his swing could be handy
16. Morris - back up for Starc
17. Murphy - Lyon's replacement should he get injured

With he plethora of Aussies over there playing County cricket, not difficult to add to the squad if needed. Renshaw, Harris, Kelly and Abbott the most likely to be called upon if needed.

Very similar to you I'd go-
Khawaja
Bancroft
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Green
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

Handscomb, Inglis, Boland, Neser, Morris and Murphy on the bench.

I think the squad will pick itself for the most part and all the squads people pick on here will be similar and specifically won't have Warner in them lol but I still feel as though if he plays and makes runs in the WTC final he will play in the first Ashes test.

I reckon Hardie is a monty as cover for Green (instead of Neser)

Warner tours before Handscomb IMO.

Can throw a Blanket over Warner, Handscomb, Bancroft Renshaw and Harris for those last two batting spots
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Handscomb got a ton last night, Warner got 60 odd in the IPL and would have to be the worse 60 he has ever made, took him 19 overs

I would pick whoever is in form out of Bancroft Renshaw Harris Handscomb having zero confidence in them making any runs.

tbc
Khawaja
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Green
Carey
Cummins (c)
Morris
Boland
Lyon

The cure for bazball is 150km/h bouncers

Can't trust Hazlewood to be fit or last with his recent history unfortunately so he doesn't make my starting team.

Reserves - Hazlewood, Starc, Neser, Murphy, Inglis, tbc, tbc, MMarsh
Dave Warner will be missed!

Fair call I wasn’t aware of that and I agree Warner is in Struggle Town as a red ball cricketer but with no other opener smashing down the door with runs I wouldn’t be surprised if they go with him.

I won’t be upset from a cricketing perspective if Warner misses out

No other opener smashing the door down with runs? I'm not sure about that. Bancroft made 945 runs @59.06 with four hundreds in the recent Shield season.

If you can't play Head in the first test in India because of how he performed 4 years ago then it would be a total about face to select Bancroft given what he did the last time he played overseas. Test average of 26 before being outed as a shit bloke.
