What settles the trade? WCE 2nd rd pick which would most likely be close to 20?
Not sure Port have much bargaining power when he was dropped and not performing at SANFL level before the knee.

Right now they have 1,19 and 32 ( which is ours tied to them ) 37, 50 ( again ours, tied to them ) and 55.

19 feels unders, 19 and 32 overs, so probably 19 and a 50 or 55.

Would take 19 I reckon, he sits anywhere from 18-30 pick range coming off the knee. Both WA clubs would want him.
Freo - Shizen Fwd line
WC- Get him in to go alongside Oscar Allen & your key fwds are done for next 5-10 years... Now just to rebuild the rest of the squad..
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Port will probably drive a hard bargain as their 1st pick in the draft is likely to be well into the 30's as it currently stands, however if WCE finish bottom then they could walk him to the PSD for nothing

Booney wrote:They say playing under Friday night lights is the big stage and Port shone under our roof as the ownership of St Kilda continued, 12 of the last 13 encounters going Port’s way after a thrilling 7 point win on Friday night and that’s 8 wins in a row at Marvel for Port.

St Kilda certainly started the better, their system was playing out as they liked with Marshall winning the ball in all areas dictating terms to the St Kilda runners, Sinclair, Steele, Clarke, all rebounding and attacking. At the other end Port looked stifled in attack, the two goals to Duursma and Boak were both hurried shots and more by accident than design. At the other end St Kilda were kick / mark and their high possession game was in full swing, 46 more touches ( 35 of them uncontested ), 15 more marks and going at 75% disposal efficiency, Port were not following the plan they’d put in place during that first term, things changed in the second. If not for Horne-Francis in the first term there wouldn’t have been a Port player in the top 5 on the ground, he was as powerful as he was brilliant in and around the contest and try as they might the St Kilda midfield couldn’t stop him in close.

The move of Hinkley down to the bench has seen Josh Carr assume more of the role of chess master, moving the pieces from above while Hinkley motivates from ground level ( think McRae and Leppitsch at Collingwood ) and the first break gave both the chance to go to work. Boak was moved into the middle, Wines went out to an uncustomary spot on the wing and the back half was given a talking too about positioning and intensity. Both quickly improved.

21 tackles for the quarter was the catalyst for the 4 goal to none term ( St Kilda’s 1st goalless qtr of 2023 ) despite losing inside 50’s 16-10 ( Port scored 4.5 from 10 entries ) and it was all about the pressure. McEntee and Powell-Pepper lifted forward of the ball, Bergman and Houston in the back half and the manic pressure of Butters in the middle had St Kilda on the hop. They couldn’t win it and when they did they couldn’t get deep entries into the forward line.

On the back of that term Port started the second half with 5 inside 50’s to 1, problem was Port didn’t score from these entries while the Saints had 1 major from 1 entry, the impressive Owens. Mid way through the term Port had had 65% of the play at our end but couldn’t capitalise, Powell-Pepper goaled but quick replies from Wood and Butler had the Saints back in front. Enter Dixon. Clearly hobbled by a knee concern Dixon struggled to move around the ground but his ability to hold strong in the contest saw him palm one into Rioli’s breadbasket and he gobbled it up. Brian Taylor mentioned it “Almost looked deliberate”. It was 100% deliberate you rabbit. Onto the outer wing and another dish off too Junior sliding by saw a forward 50 entry, some scrambling resulted until Junior mopped it up, sold Howard a pup and Juniors second stunner in 10 minutes had Port up, just, going into the last.

The Saints have been lauded for their running capacity in 2023 and that looked to be unfolding early in the last as Steele and Gresham kicked the first two of the term to regain the lead, 5-0 I50’s and 4-1 in clearances and the St’s fans were up. Some Dixon ruck work led to a Finlayson snap and goal, some Dixon pressure resulted in a Powell-Pepper goal and this was going to the wire. When Hunter Clarke strolled through the midfield to goal from long range it was anyones game. Step up JHF. After winning a clearance and handing the ball off at half back he made position on the wing and took an uncontested mark, his scintillating kick into the midfield hit Houston on the button and when he launched from inside the centre square to Dixon and Howard 1-on-1 the big man stood tall, marking and kicking truly to put Port 8 points in front with under 5 to play. With only 11 goals for the night 2 in 5 minutes looked a bridge too far for the Saints and so it was. Port saluting by 7.

Boons best – Horne-Francis, Boak, Houston, Butters, Bergman, Powell-Pepper with apologies to Dixon, Williams and Finlayson.
I noticed that Wines hardly went in for centre bounces. Is he carrying something or just letting JHF take on a bigger share?

agree, however it certainly is a leverage tool used in negotiations though, WCE might be in a pretty dark place some the end of the year and may need to take any advantage they can get.

Whilst clubs don't owe each other anything, in the spirit of goodwill a trade is preferred over the PSD for future negotiations.

I would say it is unlikely we would be using the PSD threat here. Whilst yes the club is in a shit place, unless Port are being dicks and wanting a top 10 pick for him then I reckon the deal gets done.

However he has had some injury concerns and oue current record with player injuries isn't great.

We may well pass and look to hit the draft more.

Might be worth something one day :D

In seriousness I wouldn’t be surprised if the powers at Port are considering giving him a spell next week against Norf. Problem if that happens is that I reckon it could inflame the situation.

Nice to get the W but that was an incredibly disappointing performance on Sunday.
Slow start, during that first term we were smashed in the middle and couldn't hit a target going forward.

Boak showed class by foot and was able to ensure we had a couple of effective F50 entries during the 2nd and 3rd terms. Bergman continues to grow in his role over half back, and Allir got free in the second half once the bombers had to reshuffle things and send Langford to half back.

Good that we hung in the contest and fought out a win, but I can't help but be left thinking that game confirmed we are still a long way off, despite 5 on the trot.

Port Adelaide to rebrand as Yartapuulti Football Club to celebrate Indigenous heritage over Sir Doug Nicholls Round

Don't miss out on the headlines from Sport. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Follow
The Port Adelaide Football Club will celebrate its rich Indigenous heritage by adopting a new name – Yartapuulti Football Club – for all future Sir Doug Nicholls and AFLW indigenous rounds.

The landmark decision to rename the club will elevate First Nations culture and language onto the national stage.

Its significance will be felt far and wide when the club kicks of Sir Doug Nicholls Round on Friday, May 19, marking the first time two AFL teams adopting its Indigenous name will play each other.

The Yartapuulti Football Club will host Narrm – the Indigenous name of the Melbourne Football Club – who pioneered the rebranding idea in 2022.

Past player and proud Kaurna man Uncle Mickey Kumatpi Murrutya O’Brien was one of the driving forces behind the name.

He said its meaning was deeply connected to the land near Port Adelaide.

“In Kaurna, ‘Yarta’ means place or land and ‘Puulti’ means sleep or death, which is the name the Kaurna people gave the land around the Port River,” he said.

“Language has always been a part of our landscapes and today we have this opportunity to have our name being Yartapuulti being used at Port Adelaide for this wonderful game that they are about to embark on.”

He said he was thankful and grateful to the football club.

Not only for the opportunity they gave me as a player who played at this wonderful club but this opportunity to share my culture and my connection to this place.”

Included in Port Adelaide’s rebranding is a new logo that has been carefully crafted by Brooke Rigney-Lively in collaboration with Ochre Dawn.

It features Indigenous art that represents the identity of Port Adelaide and the connection to its First Nations people in South Australia.

Port Adelaide Football Club CEO Matthew Richardson said the initiative was about celebrating Indigenous culture and the important role it plays in Australia’s game.

“Port Adelaide has a rich heritage of Indigenous players who have represented our club over many years and are intrinsic in the great eras of Port Adelaide,” he said.

“The opportunity for Yartapuulti Football Club to open Sir Doug Nicholls Round against Narrm Football Club and the significance of that moment is not lost on us.

“I couldn’t think of a more fitting moment for our club to be the Yartapuulti Football Club.”

Yartapuulti Football Club will also feature in the club’s second Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash against Richmond at the MCG on May 28.

The club will reveal its Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey in the coming weeks.

Top 4 clash. Friday night football on the national stage. Home crowd. What better time to stand up and show the football world you’re in for the fight and that’s exactly what Port Adelaide did on Friday night defeating Melbourne for the first time in 3 years by 4 points.

The name Zak Butters is going to come up a lot through this review and with good reason, on a wet night he shone brighter than the Adelaide Oval lights. 41 disposals, 10 clearances, 2 goals, 3 tackles, 8 inside 50, 12 score involvements, 8 intercept possessions at 78% disposal efficiency. A match winning performance, but he had some help.

Early on Port held sway, the momentum the fleet footed midfield created had Port entering the forward 50 with precision. Chandler had the first on the board for Melbourne the next 3 goals ( the last 3 of the term ) all went Ports way and it was on the back of the midfield. 6 marks inside 50 for the term ( Melbourne give up 10 per game ) and that man Butters had 10 touches at 100%. Ably assisted by Rozee, Horne-Francis and the front half was firing. Powell-Pepper at his pressuring best as was Drew on the big bodied Melbourne mids with 7 tackles ( no other player had more than 2) while Finlayson was leading to space and marking. The forward half was make shift. No Dixon. No Marshall. No Rioli. Early on, no problem. Defensively the Port zone was in place, Jonas is coming back into some form and with Burton forward Bergman assumed the role of the 4th defender and played his role in the air and on the ground. He’s a gem just getting polished.

When Burton, moved forward in the selection shake up, marked and goaled to start the second term Port had a handy 20 point lead as the rain came tumbling down. That went out to 25 points when the underrated but starting to get some credit Houston goaled. Houston signed a 5 year deal last year, the club showing faith in him and with good reason, his ball use is elite from half back, he can swing into the midfield and he fills the stats sheets every week, he’s involved in the air, on the ground, offensively and defensively. He’s a quiet achiever. Melbourne forward Fritsch got a hot hand and cold hair cut late in the term with 2 goals to bring Melbourne into the game and despite losing the hitouts Port had the clearances going our way, that was until Petracca got going late in the second quarter and it should have been a warning for what was to come.

Promising big man Ollie Lord got the lead back to 20 points early in the third term but the Melbourne midfield was not done. Not by a long shot. Oliver was getting on the end of some Petracca inside work as they won centre clearances 6-2 on their way to a stunning 6 goal to none blitz. Contested possession went their way 48-31 and if not for that man Butters who added his second for the term right on ¾ time from long range Melbourne would have had a lead greater than the 11 points it was. Worryingly for Port the likes of Spargo, Hunter and Pickett were benefitting from McDonald getting into the game and Grundy doing some work forward. But enough out of him. Shhh. :-$

When Drew missed a snap only for Van Rooyen to give Finlayson a sitter Port had swung back that momentum, Powell-Pepper missed, as did Finlayson from long range and McEntee, set up in a wonderful passage of play had a chance to really put Melbourne under pressure. That play, where Aliir beat Gawn 1-1 on the wing, went to Horne-Francis who missed his kick, followed it up and instead of blazing away inside 50 lowered the eyes to Butters who turned on a dime in the wet and hit McEntee. It deserved a goal. It wasn’t long though before Port had another shot and that was on the back of the first 11 inside 50’s of the term! The lead though was under a goal still until Lord took a diving mark and checksided his second. It felt like Port had the game, but not yet. And so it was. Petracca in a 1-1 with Butters on the wing kept his feet, got the 1-2 and went to McDonald who put Melbourne back in front. It was next goal wins stuff. Fritsch missed. Butters missed. Rozee did not. In a goal square scramble Horne-Francis swooped on a loose ball, picked up one hand in the wet and delivered to Rozee who fumbled, regained the ball and under immense pressure from May snapped the match winner.

Poooweeerrr! Pooooweeerrrr!

Boons best – Butters, Rozee, Bergman, Houston, Horne-Francis, Drew

Our form line is ok, in the first 10 weeks we've beaten 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th. With Richmond and Hawthorn before Bulldogs and Geelong we should hit the break in a reasonable spot. Long way to go mate, you know that. ;)

C'mon, lift the lid, live in the moment, these are the seasons to be enjoyed in the fullest!

However, it'll be the GF noone cares about, apart from Collingwood and Port supporters, or to be more precise the GF with "no winner" for the neutrals!
