Torrens University SA U18 v SA U20 Teams

South Australia’s finest talent under the age of 20 will be on display at Thebarton Oval tomorrow night when the Torrens University SA U18 team confronts the SA U20 line-up.

Kicking off at 7pm, the clash will be another vital contest for the SA U18s ahead of the AFL National Championships while the U20 combination have an opportunity to shine in front of AFL scouts.

Newly-appointed Torrens University SA U18 captain Will Patton, having returned from AFL Academy duty, will lead his team for the first time, starting in defence.

Fellow Academy members Jack Delean, Ashton Moir and Kane McAuliffe also return for the Croweaters, who will again be coached by SANFL’s Tony Bamford.

To be coached by Sturt reserves premiership coach Chris Trapp, the SA U20 combination will be captained by Eagles midfielder Adam D’Aloia with West Adelaide ball magnet Kobe Ryan as his deputy.

Several players boasting Hostplus SANFL League experience will be pushing their claims, including Glenelg’s Archie Lovelock and Lewis Rayson, West’s Cade Kennedy and Eagles pair D’Aloia and Will Pearce.

An MVP medal will be awarded to the best player for each team while the match will be exclusively live streamed with commentary on The Advertiser’s KommunityTV.

Norwood 9.7 (61) d West Adelaide 6.17 (53)
An efficient Norwood overcame a slow start to secure an eight-point win in Round 9 of the Torrens University SANFL U18s against West Adelaide at The Parade.

Trailing at quarter-time before tying up the scores at the final change, the Redlegs kicked 2.2 in the final term to the Bloods’ wasteful six behinds which proved pivotal in the result.

Norwood’s Brayden Rachwal kicked the sealer from long range with less than five minutes to play as his team earned the premiership points despite having nine fewer inside 50m entries.

Redlegs Jaidyn Mead (27 disposals), Latrelle Sumner-Pickett (15 disposals, two goals) and Jackson Savage (22 disposals, 11 marks) had a significant influence in the victory.

West lauded Riley Hill (two goals), Harley Campbell (21 disposals) and Charlie Haysman (26 disposals, one goal) for their efforts.


South Adelaide 9.11 (65) d Sturt 6.7 (43)
South Adelaide withstood a late charge from Sturt to hold on for a 22-point victory at Wigan Oval.

Leading at every change, the Panthers were set to cruise to the finish line when Sebastian Oliver goaled early in the fourth term.

But a goal to Sturt’s Taran Sanderson brought the deficit back to just 10 points with more than half the quarter to play.

Any hope for the hosts was snuffed out by South’s Noah Howes, who put the game out of reach with consecutive majors as he joined teammates Phoenix Hargrave (24 disposals, two goals) and captain Nicholas Schroder on the best players list.

Sturt’s Declan Gladigau worked hard to get his side back into the game with 26 disposals and a goal while Fraser Greaves and Eddie Quartermaine also battled hard.


Woodville-West Torrens 9.13 (67) d North Adelaide 8.8 (56)
A goalless second quarter wasn’t enough to prevent Woodville-West Torrens from grinding out an 11-point win against North Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

Faced with a 15-point deficit at half-time after managing just four behinds in the second stanza, the Roosters were able to dig themselves out of trouble by booting 7.7 to 3.5 in the second half.

Consistent Eagles midfielders Kade Herbert (27 disposals, five clearances), Pat Toole (15 disposals, three goals) and Archer Charles (20 disposals, two goals) were largely responsible for constructing the victory.

North’s Jed Dignan was the leading possession-winner on the field with 31 and two goals while Henry Turner (24 disposals) and Thomas Stevens (20 disposals) lent valuable support.


Central District 12.11 (83) d Glenelg 5.8 (38)
Central District has emerged as the competition’s pacesetter after a convincing 45-point win against reigning premier Glenelg at Stratarama Stadium.

Edging ahead of the Eagles on percentage to be placed at the top of the premiership table, the Bulldogs kept the Tigers to just one behind in the second term while also winning the key stat categories of inside 50s, tackles and clearances.

Central’s William O’Brien put on a monster performance in racking up 27 disposals, 10 marks and three goals while teammates Jayden Matz and Lachie Giles had a positive influence.

Michael Smith held his head high with 22 touches for the Bays as he received praise from the coaching staff, together with Seth May and Harry Plews.

Sturt 8.19 (67) d South Adelaide 7.7 (49)
Sturt sit a game clear at the top of the Torrens University SANFL U16 ladder after an 18-point win over South Adelaide at Wigan Oval.

The Double Blues were dominant throughout but wasteful in front of goal, with inaccuracy keeping the Panthers in it at times.

Sturt on-baller Jackson Moody gathered 31 disposals and nine clearances and ruckman Blake Thredgold was terrific, winning 33 hitouts and taking four contested marks.

Half-back Cameron Woods was South’s best, finishing with a team-high 23 disposals and seven rebound 50s.


West Adelaide 11.9 (75) d Norwood 4.5 (29)
West Adelaide’s dour defence helped it win by 46 points against Norwood at Hisense Stadium.

The scores were tied at half-time but West held the Redlegs to just one goal for the remainder of the match to consolidate their standing in the top four.

West ball-winner Josh Goldie managed 28 disposals and five rebounds and fellow midfielder Malachi Lloyd laid 11 tackles.

Darcy Speyer gathered 32 disposals and five clearances for Norwood and Robert Varcoe kicked two of his side’s four goals while looking lively up forward.


Woodville-West Torrens 11.8 (74) d North Adelaide 7.7 (49)
A third-quarter onslaught was enough to see Woodville-West Torrens overcome North Adelaide by 25 points at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

The contest was tight and low-scoring in the first half before the Eagles kicked five unanswered goals after the main break to effectively secure the game.

Eagles duo Hayden Willmott (27 disposals and five clearances) and Jevan Phillipou (26 disposals and two goals) performed well, along with forward Cooper Reschke who kicked three goals.

Charlie Dickeson was clearly the Roosters best, gathering 35 disposals, 10 inside 50s and a goal for his side.


Central District 13.11 (89) d Glenelg 6.13 (49)
Central District overcame a slow start to record an impressive 40-point win over Glenelg at X Convenience Oval.

The Bulldogs faced a deficit at quarter time with Glenelg in control, but a couple of quick goals to Dougie Cochrane ignited the home side.

Central kept the Bays goalless in the second half as midfielders Dyson Sharp, Jack Gordon and Ayden Colbourne began to dominate.

Cochrane finished with three goals to increase his lead on the goal kicking chart, while Reed Francis-Nia Nia kicked two majors for the Tigers.

Allies defeat Torrens University SA U18 team

A spirited second-half fightback wasn’t enough for the Torrens University SA U18 team after it succumbed to a well-drilled Allies outfit by 16 points at Thebarton Oval.

Trailing by as much as 49 points early in the third term, the Croweaters then banged on 8.2 to the visitors’ 2.3 to nearly steal victory in their opening AFL National Championships match.

Smooth-moving SA midfielder Sid Draper found some meaningful support after the main change as Jack Delean hit the scoreboard with four goals.

But the damage had been done in the opening hour as the Allies ran hard through corridor while producing great link-up play with skillful use of the football.

Draper – who is eligible for the 2024 AFL Draft – was SA’s only genuine contributor across four quarters, finishing with a team-high 23 disposals, eight inside 50s and six tackles.

Defender Alex Holt collected nine disposals, six tackles and five rebound 50s while SA ruck Alex Van Wyk battled hard in the centre square for eight disposals, three clearances and 24 hit outs.

SA had 13 fewer inside 50 entries for the contest which translated to 11 fewer scoring shots, proving pivotal in the final result.

South Australia will now turn its attention towards hosting arch-rival Victoria Metro next Sunday at Thebarton Oval.

The Croweaters will then hit the road for contests against Victoria Country (June 18) in Melbourne and Western Australia (June 24) in Perth to round out their campaign.

Woodville-West Torrens 13.5 (83) d Glenelg 11.7 (73)
Woodville-West Torrens survived a late scare to hold on for a 10-point win against Glenelg in Round 10 of the Torrens University SANFL U18s at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

Leading at every change and by as much as 22 points when ruckman Tom Luck converted in the 15th minute of the fourth term, the Eagles appeared to be coasting toward victory.

But late goals kicked by Tigers Angus Clarke and Harry Plews reeled in the visitors’ deficit with less than five minutes to play.

Unfortunately for the Bays, Plews’ major in the 21st minute would be the last of the contest as the hosts recorded their seventh win of the season.

Eagles Brody Mair (19 disposals, six clearances), Tarik Sauer (14 disposals, eight marks) and Jordan Tilbrook (18 disposals, one goal) played strong roles in the triumph.

Glenelg trio Kallan Bevan (26 disposals, six clearances), Ashton Beal (five goals) and Clarke did their best to pinch the premiership points.


Sturt 13.7 (85) d West Adelaide 6.7 (43)
Sturt dynamos Kobe McEntee and Connor Mills were instrumental in their team’s comfortable 42-point win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium.

The Double Blues’ hard-running rovers were everywhere as McEntee – younger brother of Power forward Jed McEntee – racked up 35 disposals, six clearances and five tackles while Mills – son of South Adelaide great Trent Mills – had 30 disposals and 10 marks.

Importantly, the visitors’ win kept them in touch with the top-four as Sam Waltham (four goals) and Mitch Dean (three goals) hit the scoreboard for Sturt.

West officials praised the efforts of Judd Hansen (17 disposals, eight marks), Sam Burbridge (22 disposals) and Caleb McCormick (18 disposals).


North Adelaide 10.7 (67) d South Adelaide 9.12 (66)
North Adelaide’s Toby Turner was the hero as his match-winning major earned his team a pulsating one-point win against South Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium.

After receiving a 25m penalty, Turner nailed his 15m set shot on a challenging angle to secure the premiership points for the Roosters with just 17 seconds left on the clock.

It was a remarkable result for the visitors considering they had 22 fewer inside 50 entries and four less scoring shots as Angus Tully (29 disposals), Taylem Stubbs (21 disposals) and Tom Stevens (23 disposals) were all prominent.

South skipper Nicholas Schroder’s consistent season continued after being named his side’s best performer while Phoenix Hargrave (32 disposals) and Ayden Duke (21 disposals) also contributed strongly for the Panthers.


Central District 18.13 (121) d Norwood 6.5 (41)
Central District boosted its percentage to retain top spot of the premiership table with an 80-point victory against Norwood at The Parade.

Bulldogs Tom Cochrane and Charlie Nicholls had a field day as they helped themselves to six goals each as their team slammed on 12.7 to 1.4 in a rampant second half.

Beau Ryan (29 disposals, eight marks), Nathan Johnson and Lachie Giles also had powerful performances for the visitors.

On a tough day at the office, Norwood’s Riley Kirchhofer, Brayden Rachwal and Jackson Savage did their best to stem the tide.

Central District 18.6 (114) d Norwood 8.10 (58)
An eight-goal first term from Central District laid the foundation for a 56-point win over Norwood at The Parade in Round 10 of the Torrens University SANFL U16s.

The Bulldogs effectively sealed the game in the first quarter, with Norwood improving as the game wore on but unable to peg the margin back.

The usual suspects did the damage for the visitors, with midfielder Dyson Sharp gathering 42 disposals and a goal and forwards Dougie Cochrane and Aidan Schubert both kicking four goals.

Redlegs forward Robert Varcoe continued his strong season by booting three goals, while Will Prescott finished with 29 disposals and nine inside-50s.


Woodville-West Torrens 13.10 (88) d Glenelg 3.6 (24)
Woodville-West Torrens made a statement by defeating finals contender Glenelg by 64 points at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

The Eagles kept the Bays goalless in the first half as the likes of Brock Jamieson and Jevan Phillipou ran riot through the midfield.

Glenelg had no answers for the pair, with Jamieson accumulating 41 disposals and nine clearances and Phillipou kicking a goal from his 29 possessions.

Charlie Brodie and Gus Welsby were among Glenelg’s better players, gathering 21 and 20 disposals respectively.


North Adelaide 12.10 (82) d South Adelaide 9.11 (65)
North Adelaide bounced back onto the winners list with a 17-point victory over South Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium.

The Roosters led at every change then survived a late Panthers surge to claim the points and stay in touch with the top four.

Ball magnet Charlie Dickeson was everywhere for North gathering 36 possessions and 18 marks, while teammates Ethan Benbow and Alex Jankovic each booted three goals.

Cain Florance was a standout for South, accumulating 34 touches, seven clearances and a goal in the loss.


Sturt 7.10 (52) d West Adelaide 2.7 (19)
Sturt consolidated its position on top of the ladder with a 33-point win over West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium.

In a tight and low-scoring affair, goals proved difficult to come by for both sides.

Double Blues ruckman Blake Thredgold was typically dominant in the ruck duels, winning 24 hit outs to go with his 19 disposals.

Josh Goldie was prolific for the Bloods with 28 disposals and ten rebounds.

SA and WA both getting pumped at the moment. In fact SA got pump beaten well by the Allies and pumped by Vic Metro.

The West Adelaide Football Club would like to inform that U16’s coach Scott Patching will be coaching his final game this weekend after taking on a fantastic work opportunity.

Scott has been a highly valued member of our club since his commencement in the 2019 season.

Scott spent his first three seasons at the club as an assistant coach in our U18 Centre of Excellence Program, before being appointed to the role of U16 Head Coach for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Scott’s knowledge of the game, combined with his passion for developing and preparing youth players for senior football has ensured he leaves having made a strong impression on those who have spent time with him.

We wish Scott all the best for the next chapter of his career, and the exciting move this brings for his family. Thanks Scott, along with the support from his family – wife Sophie and sons Henry and George.

Paul Hollands who is a current under 16’s assistant coach will be taking the role as an interim head coach for the remainder of the 2023 season

South Adelaide 12.10 (82) d Norwood 7.6 (48)
South Adelaide defeated Norwood by 34 points under lights on Friday night at Coopers Stadium in round 11 of the Torrens University SANFL U18s.

After a tight and low-scoring first term, the visiting Panthers were able to get some separation on the scoreboard, led by a dominant midfield.

Returning to the Panthers line-up, tough midfielder Tom Wheaton was dominant around the ground, kicking three goals along with his outstanding 15 clearances and 32 disposals.

Forward Jay Polkinghorne had a day to remember for the Redlegs, booting five goals and taking eight marks.


Central District 9.9 (63) d North Adelaide 6.8 (44)
Central District maintained its position at the top of the ladder with a 19-point win over North Adelaide at Prospect Oval.

The Bulldogs gained an early lead and never looked back, running out comfortable winners against North, who beat Central by just seven points in round three.

Tom Cochrane was the leading ball-winner for the visitors with 24 disposals, as Riley McDonald battled hard for his team on the inside.

Angus Tully was at his prolific best for the Roosters, gathering 34 disposals with Owen Kalic and Hugh Payze also among North’s best.


Sturt 10.7 (67) d Glenelg 6.10 (46)
Sturt jumped into the top four with a 21-point triumph over rivals Glenelg at Wigan Oval.

In a relatively low-scoring affair, the Double Blues always looked in control despite never putting great distance between themselves and the Bays on the scoreboard.

Ben Camporeale had the ball on a string for the Bays, collecting 37 disposals, 12 marks and 10 clearances, and Charlie McAuliffe kicked four goals. Michael Smith and Beau Symonds were among Glenelg’s best.

Kobee Dabinett (24 disposals and 11 clearances) and Kobe McEntee (23 disposals and seven tackles) were both influential for Sturt, and so too Ned Atkinson who kicked a goal from 17 disposals.


Woodville-West Torrens 17.7 (109) d West Adelaide 9.5 (59)
Woodville-West Torrens made it seven wins in a row with a strong 50-point victory over West Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

The form team of the U18 competition, the Eagles set the game up with a terrific opening term to remain equal top with Central District.

Zac Schwarz was busy for the Eagles, accumulating 31 disposals and nine clearances, while key forward Izaac Niemann booted five goals.

Charlie Haysman flew the flag for the Bloods with 29 disposals, eight marks and two goals, with Sam Burbridge the only other multiple goal kicker for West Adelaide.

Norwood 14.9 (93) d South Adelaide 8.5 (53)
Norwood cruised to an impressive 40-point win over South Adelaide at Coopers Stadium in the Torrens University SANFL U16s.

The Redlegs led at every change to secure an important victory and keep them within reach of the top four.

Forwards Majoor Ackland and Mitchell Stevenson both kicked four goals for Norwood, with Harry Lake the leading ball winner with 20.

Jacob McGarry booted three goals for South and Jett Reid managed two.


Sturt 9.14 (68) d Glenelg 2.4 (16)
Sturt made it three wins on the trot with a 52-point victory over Glenelg at Wigan Oval.

The Double Blues restricted Glenelg to their second-consecutive goal-less first half to move two games clear on top of the ladder.

Sturt midfielder Jackson Moody was combative all game, finishing with 21 disposals and 10 tackles, as Ben McArthur kicked three majors.

The Bays’ Isaiah Clothier’s consistent year continued as he notched up a game-high 27 disposals.


Central District 13.11 (89) d North Adelaide 10.9 (69)
Central District managed its fourth win in as many weeks by defeating North Adelaide by 20 points at Prospect Oval.

The Roosters got the better of the first quarter but the Bulldogs quickly bounced back, maintaining the lead after edging ahead before half-time.

Cameron Nairn performed well for the Bulldogs, kicking three goals and accumulating 17 disposals.

Trey Luteria was strong through the midfield for the Roosters, winning 21 disposals and four clearances.


West Adelaide 13.8 (86) d Woodville-West Torrens 8.8 (56)
West Adelaide jumped into the top four by defeating Woodville-West Torrens by 30 points at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

West Adelaide took a 22-point break into quarter time but the Eagles hit back to have scores level at the half.

However the Bloods were too strong in the end, with the win ensuring them jumped ahead of the Eagles.

Zanen Syrokos kicked four goals for West Adelaide and Jamie Russell Swanson managed three for the home side.

Torrens University SA U18 Team defeat Victoria Country

The Torrens University SA U18 team hit top gear as it cruised to an impressive 19-point win against Victoria Country in Game 3 of the AFL National Championships in Melbourne.

Playing with as many as six underage players eligible for the 2024 AFL Draft, the Croweaters were fuelled by standout displays from two of those players in midfielder Sid Draper and fey forward Tyler Welsh.

Draper, who has arguably been SA’s best in losses to the Allies and Victoria Metro, was again classy through the centre square with 29 disposals, four clearances and five inside 50s as his team weathered an early storm in conceding the opening four goals.

Playing his first game of the Championships, Welsh – the son of former Crow Scott Welsh – looked completely at ease at the level, kicking a game-high five goals.

”I was bit nervous before the game as I tried to get int the zone but I came and let everything out and focused on the team – it was really fun,” Welsh told Fox Footy after the match.

”He (father Scott) tells me to work hard and play with intensity by leading hard up the ground while going for my marks.”

Confronted with a 25-point deficit inside the opening 11 minutes of the match, the Croweaters showed plenty of spirit to work their way back into the contest by using the ball nicely via foot to register 30 more marks than their opponents.

Welsh and athletic small forward Jack Delean went to work in stemming the tide as SA trailed by just seven points at the opening change before hitting the front two minutes into the second stanza thanks to Delean.

Kicking four goals for the morning, Delean’s second was a beauty as he snapped over his shoulder from a tight angle while using all of his natural goalsense.

”It was a much better effort than in the first two game, we came out with a lot of effort and intensity so I was really proud of the boys,” Delean told Fox Footy after the match.

”I prepared well, stayed confident in my ability. I like a celebration, it helps get the boys pumped up.”

High-flying Ashton Moir also sprang to life early in the match, using his body well to kick his first major before playing on from a sliding chest mark to wheel around on his left successfully from beyond 50m.

Two more bottom-agers in Louie Montgomery and Phoenix Hargrave hit the scoreboard with consecutive goals to regain the lead heading into half-time.

From there, the visitors were never headed as they banged on 7.3 to 5.1 in the second half to claim a well-earned victory at Ikon Park, the home of Carlton Football Club.

Eye-catching defender Bodie Ryan (14 disposals, six rebound 50s) did an excellent job of curtailing potential No.1 pick Harley Reid after he kicked the opening three goals of the game while promising ruckman Taylor Goad was a fine performer for SA with eight disposals, 23 hit outs and a clever snap goal along the ground in the third term.

The Torrens University SA U18 team will now aim to end its campaign on a high with a second win in its last outing against Western Australia in Perth next Saturday.

Torrens University SA U16 Team – Game 1

The Torrens University SA U16 team will kickstart its AFL National Championship campaign when it confronts Western Australia in Perth on Sunday.

To be coached by championship-winning mentor Julian ****, the Croweaters’ line-up features strongly-built Central District midfielder Dyson Sharp as captain with prolific North Adelaide ball-winner Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier as his deputy.

Rooster Sam Cumming, Woodville-West Torrens’ Jack Cook and classy Sturt left-footer Noah Roberts-Thomson round out the Torrens University SA U16 leadership group.

Cook, the son of former Crows and Central District rover Tim Cook, is among three sons of former AFL players in the team, together with Dougie Cochrane (son of former Port and Kangaroos’ midfielder Stuart Cochrane) and Louis Kellaway (son of former Richmond defender Duncan Kellaway).

Starting at 1.30pm SA time, the opening encounter will be played at West Coast’s training facility (Mineral Resources Park) ahead of further matches on Tuesday July 4 against Victoria Country at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast and Friday July 7 against Victoria Metro at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport.
