It's not an Australian National Anthem protocol nor has it ever been but a lot of people are easily pursuaded by Yanks these days.

Weird quarter, Giants looked the better side but didn't score a goal!
Mind you the advantage rule wasn't a huge advantage to them.

Nothing to do with respect, it's never been an Australian thing. Defence Force personnel don't even take their hats off for the national anthem.
In fact it would be disrespectful to follow the Yanks like sheep and not adhere to Australian traditions.

Mind you poppies on Anzac Day were never a thing too and look at it these days.

Never been instructed to remove a hat before for the anthem, the Last Post it's a given.
